Consise/Basics

Name: W'ren
Nickname:
Pre-Impression Name: Weiren

Position: Weyrling
Past Ranks: Candidate, Smith apprentice

Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pan

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Prior to the illness that divided Pern's population into mutant and nonmutant, Weiren was a tall, wirey boy with sandy-blonde hair and lanky features. He's still a tall, wirey boy with sandy-blonde hair and lanky features— and more. The skin that used to be creamy hardened slightly, sprouting glossy, shimmering scale along his hairline, back, and the back of his legs/the tops of his arms. Skin remains on what would be his underbelly, if he were a four legged creature; his his skin a slightly-tanner shade of cream then they used to be, almost orange-toned as they approach the scales. The scales dominate his shoulders, coming down the tops of his arms narrowly, ending at his wrists; likewise along the back of his legs— wide across the backs of the thighs, and narrowing until his ankles. His back is completely claimed by scales, which wrap around his torso to dominate his sides as well. They follow his hairline, leaving his face clear. These scales are a glimmering copper, and with them came the spars jutting out of his back; starting at his neck, boney skin-covered spars begin to jut out; a few inches at first, quickly increasing to 3-feet long across his shoulders, and shortening in length as they line his back. They're back to a few inches as their line slopes into the small of his back, disappearing completely before hitting the tailbone. These scale-covered spars are connected with a membrane of skin not unlike a dragon's wingsail, in a creamy copper shade, fading to pink-copper at the very edges.

Personality

Even before this whole mutation thing, Weiren was a nervous kid.

He's always been more comfortable on his own, working on some sort of puzzle, then in groups of people; that tendency still manifests. It's not a lack of trust, per se, as a lack of his comfort: being around other people just tends to make him jumpy, and nervous. He's not good at dealing with people and he knows it; that discomfort leads to more discomfort. He generally needs to address some kind of problem to get over it; if he's distracted by some logical puzzle, he'll go after that and forget to be nervous, at which point he realizes that it's not really so bad.

He's wary, as well, but again it's not typically a trust issue— or a trust of people issue. He doesn't like the concept of faith, he doesn't like putting things up to chance. Taking risks really isn't the kind of thing he likes to do; if he's going to do something that could be dangerous, he wants to take every single precaution that can be thought of to take first, and even then he'd really rather stay on ground that has been tread before. It's safer. No sense in risking life, limb, safety, stability, or sanity.

Despite all this, there's a sense of steadiness to Weiren: you can count on him. If he has a job, he's going to do it to the best of his ability: even if that means a lot of agonizing over how best to accomplish something with which he's unfamiliar. He can be counted on to give good advice.

Wieren is incredibly logical, which is somewhat grounding; he approaches life as a set of scientific problems, trusting the concepts and theories of Logic to guide him— and by this we mean the formal, official logic the harper's teach, not just the colloquial version of the concept of logic- though he's got an abundance of that too. This tends to lead him to the fair decisions, though these can occasionally ignore such organic factors as emotions and other illogical things. He isn't totally blind to those things, and can compromise, of course- but they're far out of his comfort zone.

At the same time, Weiren means well; he's generally a good person, and doesn't want to hurt anyone- in fact, he would rather make people happy, if he had to deal with them at all. For this reason, he shows some promise of being a diplomatic sort- provided he could get his communication skills worked on. He's very loyal, and if you can look beyond the nerves and social-awkwardness, is even friendly.

Weiren is good with numbers. On earth, he'd be on the track to be some kind of engineer; on Pern, he contented himself with the smiths before he got searched. All the awkwardness with interpersonal relationships, communication, and language dissolves when numbers get involved: he has a mind for complex equations and problem-solving. He also has a passion for it- were he will be withdrawn in a group of people, the moment a complex problem or a difficult equation pops onto the scene, he's almost a totally different person, passionately jumping on it. The fervor seems initially strange to such a soft-spoken boy, but it's always present: just active for very few things.

Nervous, wary, jumpy, steady, smart, thoughtful, gentle, non-violent, numerical, logical

History

Weiren has always been a bright kid; he was actually born to harpers, and though he excelled in his early lessons, he never showed the same penchant for language that either of his parents did, or the passion for it. Their hopes were that he would follow in their footsteps, and they were initially disappointed: though he did well in lessons, especially those involving math, he just didn't have that passion.

Or so they thought. As Weiren continued his studies, his interest in language and traditional areas in harpering faded significantly. He had no voice for singing, and though he showed some initial interest in later schooling in the legal aspects of the harpering world, this interest quickly faded when it came with the ties to language required to make the eloquent arguments. It was only math that captured his attention.

Those in charge of his schooling weren't quite as willing to give up on Weiren as his parents were- they taught him directly, and could see the interest he had in math- an interest neither of his parents shared. They pointed him in the direction of the smiths, who did more complicated math on a regular basis- thus offered an interesting path, Weiren finally showed the passion that his parents had. They were thrilled, even if it was for a different craft, and sent him to the smithcrafthall.

They managed to discover this tendency in time for normal apprenticeship, thankfully, and was ensconced in the crafthall by the end of his tenth turn.

He was well on the track for becoming a senior apprentice when the disasters hit. He survived them mostly by luck- they had come out of nowhere to him, and he had been totally unprepared. The smithcrafthall he was stationed at was badly hit; though the buildings themselves were fairly stable, the things they contained were not. He escaped with only minor burns across one arm. He had, and still has, no idea what happened to his family: like many, he was simply unable to contact anyone he knew from that area, and was unable to get an answer in one direction or another.

He didn't have time to dwell on his potential losses; he was immediately dragged to Remnant hold in what was a veritable sea of refugees. He still has little recollection of exactly how he got there; the events leading up to it were more an issue of survival than anything else.

Weiren's exposure to the Illness was a long-term thing. He was among the later victims to fall ill, and it seemed to have a prolonged course for the boy. It began slowly, and weakly, and progressed over the course of weeks to a full-out condition. It almost killed him more then once, and the healers were skeptical when he began recovering the most recent time— and kept recovering. They're still surprised.

As with the illness, the mutations it brought were late in coming and slow to manifest; they started with itching, lots and lots of itching. His skin began to grow darker, picking up those orangy-tones— and then the scales themselves sprouted. The growth of the spars was more painful then itchy, and left him confined to his bed as badly as the illness itself had; even after they'd grown in completely, they were sore and raw for a week afterward— and then the wingsail grew in: a process equally itchy and painful.

Once all of that had finished, Weiren discovered he could get some lift by flapping the “wings” in an undulating fashion, and since then, he's been trying- relatively unsuccessfully- to teach himself how to fly.

Abilities

AbilitiesGold-DnD-dragon features: Note that that's an OOC term, to make it easier to understand what this portion of the mutation is. While he's mostly based off of a copper dnd dragon, the “wings” come from the gold variety; they undulate when he “flies,” and follow the line of his back as singular, strait spars connected by wingsail. Otherwise he's partially covered in copper-colored scales, as detailed in the description. IC the kid's just covered in scales and has odd protrusions on his back that make wearing shirts very difficult.

Selective Telekinesis (self.): I mentioned him flying, and though he's not quite good at it yet, he's learning to fly. What he's not aware of is the fact that this is actually the mental aspect of his powers; alone, his wings aren't nearly enough to lift him off the ground. The telekinesis only applies to himself, and in order to accomplish it, he must be going through the motions of flying: he can't lift off without taking a running jump, for instance, and he has to be moving his wings to fly. Theoretically he has the potential to use the telekinesis without going through these motions, and perhaps even not on himself, but since he's not aware that the telekinesis is it's own power, he is unlikely to ever realize this potential- even if he were to discover that, it's unlikely that it would go beyond his capability of lifting himself up in the air.

Brown M Dragon
…The brown that spilled out managed to turn his fall into something almost graceful, sliding head over tail and coming back up onto his feet. He gleamed in the glow of the setting sun, a shading of three browns. A creamy brown like milk-added klah spread over his muzzle and down the front of his neck, but cut off suddenly at the first neckridge on the back of his neck and plunged into the darkest of browns, spreading down his spine and onto his wings On his belly the creamy brown faded into a paler brown that matched the finest sand on the beach. The dark and light didn't meet until the tip of his long tail on the webbing.
He looked otherwise like the other mutant browns, webbing to help him swim - except for one front paw, which had and odd extra front claw - a large one, not a small one, making it look even odder. Six claws adorned his left front claw instead of the normal five. …
