Name: Vari'us
Nickname: Var
Pre-impression name: Varusian
Position: Weyrling
Past Ranks: Holdbrat, Guard cadet, Guardsman, Candidate
Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pansexual
- Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.
Looks
Varusian hasn't quite hit his adult size yet, but he's a solid man nonetheless. He's reached his final 6', but his form is still lanky, with the thin muscles of youth on his frame. He'll fill out to have defined musculature, though he'll still be a relatively light guy for his height. His hair is black and is kept shorn relatively short- no more then an inch and a half at any given point. If it gets longer, it falls in his eyes, and that's how he knows to cut it. The stuff resists gravity, being coarse, and tends to keep itself in the shape of however he was sleeping: he has perpetual bed head. His skin is a gravelly sort of tan: light brown, but more gray-toned then red-toned. His eyes are a bright blue shade, contrasting with the neutral-tones of the rest of him. Blue and silver are his favorite colors, and as such he tries to wear blue and various Grey shades when he can.
Personality
Var is a hothead who still thinks he can change the world.
He's also a nice guy and a tenacious fighter. It's important to remember that Var was raised in a guard's household, and was groomed to become a guard. That didnt' end up being the vocation his father had been hoping for him, but some of it still stuck, and a lot of it was already inborn. Var did as was expected of him and, for the right person, he will do everything and more they ask for.
Var thinks for himself. It's a problem in your ordinary guardsman. He's intelligent, and he's clever. He knows when he's being lied to, he knows when the reasons he's being given are empty, and he doesn't appreciate it. He tends to be impatient- just a natural part of him. If he's comfortable in the role he's currently wearing, it's somewhat diminished— but he's always a little antsy, waiting for the next big thing to come up. He's a warrior, bred and trained, and it's the big adrenaline rushes he lives and strives for. He became a candidate because the guard was dull: the dragons were a more obvious way to do good in the lives of the average pernese. Besides, people don't get in your way if you have a dragon. Even if he's comfortable, he'll still be turning his mind ahead to the next big rush— how better can we prepare? If he's uncomfortable, he'll be hounding his superiors and chomping on the bit, doing everything he can do and perhaps more under the table to better prepare for whatever thing he thinks is most likely to come up. He's very much a hot-head.
Var is a determined man, and he's tenacious. IF he makes up his mind to do something, it will be done, and he will pursue it viciously. It's not a singleminded dedication- on the contrary, his head is everywhere, but it has direction, and it's oddly effective. He focuses more on the offensive then the defensive. How is he going to DO this? What does he need to do in order to get it done? What's the fastest way? He does tend to filter out superfluous things— if it's not related to the task at hand, imminent survival, or his family, he'll forget about it. That goes for eating and sleeping: sometimes he needs someone to give him a shove and remind him that he's not bionic. He'll hound his superiors about things, if he deems it important enough, even bordering on insubordination to make his points.
Var is incredibly willful. He's not so much imposing, though his conviction in his own beliefs can occasionally make him more imposing then he means to be. He's strong-minded, and not much will change an opinion of his once he's formed it. Not that he won't listen to reason- he's quite proud of his level-headedness, and even in the deep fervor of his determination he can take a step back and either argue his point or realize the lack of sanity to what he's doing most of the time. Even his impulsive hotheadedness is backed by his logic.
He absolutely hates being hampered by rules. If something needs to happen, it needs to happen— he doesn't have time to ask permission of the top people in charge and go through some long bureaucracy. It's part of the reason he left the guard: too much formality, not enough doing. He's stubborn and easily frustrated: it gives him a short fuse for anything that must be done by the books, if he can't see the logic in the book's methods. A man of action, Var wants to do things, not sit around and debate the ethics of something. He's well versed in his own ethics, and can debate those if he needs to- he sees no need for him to debate the ethics of other people's actions or the wider impacts of things. Let the harpers do that, and let them do it far away from him.
Being Led is a chafing issue for Var, and it entirely depends on his leader. He finds it hard to respect most people in charge, for several reasons. They aren't the "Grunts", they sit and shuffle laws and paperwork and ethics, they exist for formality, and they engage in politics. IF they do not prove themselves worthy of respect, he is more likely to get frustrated and chomp the bit. He's slightly-headstrong even when he does respect a leader: if he doesn't, slightly is a massive understatement. He can and will take things into his own hands. He holds grudges, he questions orders.
Var has great potential to be a leader himself, but he also has major drawbacks. Fools rush in. Var likes to think of himself a non-fool, he likes to think that he considers things carefully, and to an extent, he does. He just doesn't have the patience to consider it fully. Part of what frustrates him about people he serves under is that they take too long in considerations- he understands the necessity, but he's likely to skimp on that slightly. Oh, being in a leadership position will sober him: he'll spend time agonizing over decisions and whatnot, but in the end, he's probably going to go with the most direct, immediate course— and potentially take some hits for it. Charge the front gates or sneak around the side? He might send a small group to sneak around the side, but he's going to be the one who leads the charge on the gates. Basically, he lacks discipline, and it's an inherent trait.
He is a compassionate and empathetic person, though, especially for his people— which will encompass those he leads. That's why he'll bother to slow down and think things through at all, if he ever becomes a leader: because he cares and he wants the best for his people. If shit goes south, he will feel it. He will agonize over it. His people are almost more important to him then he is: if someone betrays him, it'll piss him off and he'll seek vengeance. If someone betray his people? He will try to kill them with all the fire of a vengeful angel. The thing that he will balk at when it comes to roles of leadership is the responsibility- that making decisions that can hurt people. He will agonize over the people he does hurt, and is prone to mindnumbing guilt and eventually anger.
That said, he'd do what he needs to, violence included. He is a guardsman.
For all that he would potentially be a good leader, he'd really… rather not to be honest. Or rather, depending on who's the choice for leader, he'd rather not. If it's most of the people he doesn't respect, then yeah. He thinks he'd do a better job and he'd like the chance to try. However, if a leader happens to win his respect, he will happily follow them, and be a very strong second in command. That also alleviates his guilt, which will hamper him considerably if allowed to grow. He'll be more forgiving of things that frustrate him in a leader he respects— inaction, for instance, so long as they're not ALL inaction— but he'll still voice his opinions and make it known if he disagrees.
What does he respect in a leader? A rapport with one's followers. Mutual respect. Willingness to explain reasons behind decision, and sound reasoning behind those decisions. Willingness to debate. Willingness to hear alternative opinions or plans. Calm in "Battle"— stressful situations— or being a good teacher. Emotional awareness. Strength. Action, not simply wading through politics. A sense of humor goes a long way. Basically, someone who will be an equal even though they're a technical authority, someone who can be trusted, and someone who is a friend in addition to a leader.
Var is a deeply moral being. While he doesn't much care for the ethics of most other people, his own morals define his every action. He is very much to each his own— do whatever you like, as long as it doesn't tie his hands.
As such, he will occasionally do the wrong thing for the right reasons. The end justifies the means in his eyes. So the bandits are raiding traders and small cotholds, and killing people? His reaction would be to assemble a strong force and go after them, and kill all the motherfuckers. Ethically, not entirely the right thing to do. The typical procedure would be more along the lines of rounding them up, questioning them, and having a trial to decide their fate. That takes too long, in his eyes. He'll only wait to confirm that they're actually the guilty parties, and then he'll give them some draconian punishment. That is, perhaps, the most extreme example I can think up, but it illustrates it pretty well.
For all his fervor, Var is a nice guy. He's courteous to most people, especially those he likes. He's rarely rude unless you've given him reason to be. He's genial, friendly, and approachable. He likes the company of others, even if he's more comfortable in a slightly rowdy group of guys. He's informal, clearly, and likes it that way— though he can do formal if he needs to, with some discomfort. Given his fervor, he's surprisingly empathetic and compassionate, so long as you're not a murderin' raider. He's also rather sensitive and emotionally aware, though he'll usually only reveal that in ordinary conversation when he's gotten close to someone. He gets on pretty well with common people; it's authority he has trouble with.
He's a sarcastic person with a very dry sense of humor and a sharp wit. Despite that, he rarely emotionally wounds or is offensive: he successfully skirts that fine line. If a comment is barbed, he usually won't say it unless he knows the person he's addressing and knows they won't be offended. He's willing to give just about anyone a chance, in either direction- he'll let people prove for themselves what they are, be that friend, foe, or outrageous flaming asshole. They get a special rank.
Var is frank and he says what he thinks. He is blunt, he won't mince his words, but he's not cruel— if something's going to cut, he'll soften it as much as he can while still being effective. If some blunt comment needs not to be said and will do damage, he probably won't say it. He's a strong person. He's protective, to different levels: he's protective of all of pern, of his home, of his family, of his friends, and of those weaker then himself, all in slightly different ways. He is only possessive in a committed romantic relationship, and then he's very possessive (not in the abusive "YOU CAN'T GO OUT WITH YOUR FRIENDS" kind of way, but in the thrilled-to-be-with-you-monogamous way, if that makes sense. Game's over if you cheat, basically, but he's not going to limit actions or be creepy.)
Var's kind of your ordinary guy, in a lot of ways. He's serious about his duty, but past that, he likes to relax. He's easy-going personally (outside of the whole work thing), and gets moreso the more comfortable you get around him. He's not really the loud-boisterous party type, but he enjoys going drinking with a handful of his friends. Quiet conversations in a moderately busy bar are some of his favorite things. He likes to laugh and roughhouse. He really enjoys a good natured fight, and spars in his spare time when he can find a partner to do so. He'll probably never stop strength and combat guard training for as long as he is physically able. He's also a sexual person, and sees sex as roughly the same sort of stress-relief as sparring (only without the violence). Casual sex is nothing strange to him, and he enjoys it.
Var absolutely hates with all of his person politics. He sees it as various games of dirty, slimy people who can't win a rank by their own merit, so go around sweet-talking others. He has no patience for that sort of thing.
Var is incredibly loyal: it's who he is. He forms spheres of loyalty, so to speak: those weaker then him, Pern, his hold of origin, the Weyr, his friends. One would expect the weyr to come first, all things considered, but that's not entirely true: the first thing that comes first is his family. His dragon, his significant other, any children he might spawn, and very close friends will all be put before the weyr, and he'll act in their favor first.
Var is a family man. He always has been. One of the things he'll always regret about giving up the guard and joining the weyr is his inability to eventually get married and spawn. He'll loose that close-familial attachment to any kids he might have. That said, if he ever does spawn he will try to be a fixture in their lives- as much as a dragonrider can.
Var tends to get attached to objects, places and people, especially if they remind him of "home." Home is a loose concept, and it's more a feeling of comfort tied to certain people rather then specific places. Friendship goes far with him.
As for romance: casual sex is all well and good, and he enjoys it, but he is a closet romantic. If he ever gets the chance to find someone to stay with for the long-term, he'll pursue it— the technical marriage may not be an option for dragonriders, but the committed relationship (outside of flights) is still an option he hopes for. He'll be awkward at first- he's not used to being vulnerable, especially in an emotional sense. He'll make up for that in enthusiasm, though, and loyalty. He is affectionate, loving, and gentle. He needs a partner who is his equal and who he can truly respect, but if he finds that sort of thing he'll match pace after some initial nervousness.
History
Var's dad was a guardsman. So was his dad. And his dad before that. And so on.
So, of course, when his firstborn kid was a son, the man was proud, and naturally began to groom Var as soon as he was old enough to walk to join the guard. There was no question: that's what he would do. He would be a guard, and he would get married and have babies who would also be guards, and so forth. His father had been born in the north, but came to Rebrint in hopes of a better lifestyle, and lept into the local guard there: Var was expected to carry the tradition on in their new home.
And he intended to. Really, he did. He went into the guard as soon as they could take him, did all the proper training. He gave it his all and was very dedicated— but it wasn't what he'd thought it would be. Mostly it was drills and formality, which Var saw as desperately dull. He was chafing in the position as early as 14— by 17, he was really starting to get upset. He'd expressed his dissatisfaction to his father and had some rather spectacular rows, in which he threatened to leave all those "ineffectual sacks of air" behind, but he never did.. not until a dragon came to visit Rebrint.
He'd seen dragons before, but they were always the larger bronzes and browns, and never at a distance. This pretty little thing was a green, and took some very distinct interest in him. When her rider informed him that his dragon thought him a good potential candidate, he jumped at the opportunity— it only took a few questions about what good the dragonriders of pern could do for the people to convince him that he'd have a better chance at getting stuff done at the weyr then in the guard. So, off he went.
He did not Impress at that hatching, nor did he impress at the one after. He hasn't given up, though— returning to the guard seems a nightmare, and he's set himself on standing as a candidate until he's too old to be allowed to do so anymore.

Bronze M Dragon
Strangely enough, this bronze is such a mashup of different tones it's almost hard to accurately pinpoint him as a bronze. Okay, that may be a lie, seeing that rich, bronze color that is so treasured and respected completely covers the top of his wings and along the spine of the beast. From that base, that deliciously rich base, a spring of colors pop up all over the dragon. The underside of the wing, since we're talking about wings, is shockingly greenish, the green in that bronze color seeping through and marking up the membrane's underside in lines and stripes and blotches, some hints of mint even shimmering here and there next to pieces that look light bronze, even. Now, the wings aren't what make this dragon a beauty to look at.
The head of the dragon is splashed with golden, covering his muzzle and fading into an orangey-bronze throughout his forehead. Bands of a reddish color stripe over his head knobs, and repeat throughout the length of his neck and throat, branching off to even stripe down his side, the sizes of the stripes shrinking as they continue onto where hid hind legs meet his body. On the neck, the upper side of it, green stripes shine through the bronze and red, much like they do on his wing sails. Bursts of bronze colorations shine through on his sides, speckling his hide carefully. Now, those hind legs and tail do have a bit of a greyish coloration to the bronze, although it only adds contract to the vibrant upper body of the boy.

Green F Svortis
The dark evergreen looking color that washes over the wide of the creature is intercepted by various shades of lighter green that even tinge into the realms of yellow, especially on the sharp, swept back crest that the Svorits has. Small indentations are in the crest, pushing in rather than the stereotypical out that most do. The wings have streaky blue tones on those membranes, and near the edges they look to be completely that sea-green color. On that bluish tone there are bright splotches of lime green, some containing centers of bright yellow. The throat-hide is, too, a dark green, and when inflated does prove to contain speckles of the yellow found elsewhere.
