Consise/Basics
Name: Shiya
Nickname:
Position: Weyrling
Past Ranks: herder apprentice, Candidate
Gender: Female
Sexuality*: Pansexual
- Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.
Looks
Shiya is 5'5", and seems taller because if the way she carries herself. She always walks deliberately and stands strait, shoulders checked as if she expects a fight at any given moment. Her eyes are sharp and hazel, and her hair is naturally wavy and a very deep shade of natural red, almost an auburn brown. She keeps this long, when she can, though she ties it back to keep it out of the way. Her features are small and sharp, except for an aqualine nose. She tends to wear black, reds, and reddish browns.
Personality
A creature of mingled calmness and fire, Shiya has an intensity rarely seen in human beings. She has that same ferocious severity as one can see in a hawk's eyes, which is true of her overall personality too.
There is definitely some kind of energy that permeates everything Shiya is and does. It's vin the way she walks, stands, looks at people.. it's in the things she does. It's like some kind of fire, and is often mistaken for anger, but it's not. It's a sort of fierce severity borne of someone who knows what she is. She was made to survive and to fight, a naturalborn warrior. Pern doesn't have great big wars or places to fight, so she'll turn this energy to different use: day to day survival, and threadfall if she ever fights a dragon.
Against an enemy, metaphorical or literal, she is vicious and ruthless. She doesn't back away from a fight, and her response to challenge and getting her ass kicked is to come back and bare her teeth some more. Metaphorical obstacles are where most of this fierceness will manifest, as toothy and occasionally frustrated determination. She'll hack at walls and boundaries like they were opposing knights of an army, and she'll defend her friends or family to the death. She can be downright vengeful.
It's important to note that however much this fire that fuels her seems like anger, it really.. isn't. She has a temper and it can be sparked in moments, resulting in that same fiery tenaciousness that she pursues challenges with, but that's somewhat unusual. She is not bitter, she is not usually cruel. She is, in fact, quite serene when she's "at rest"— not actively going after some cause/issue.
Shiya's mind moves very quickly. She's constantly observing and analyzing her surroundings and the situation she's in. She's not ambitious, but if she was she'd be damned good at manipulating people- lucky for everyone, she has no want of power or rank. (Too much responsibility- it gets in the way of getting real stuff done.) She doesn't look at people, she stares. It's kind of off-putting, as is the forwardness that she presents herself with. She doesn't mince words- if she has something to say, she'll say it. Granted, she won't make observations for the sake of cruelty— if someone's writhing over some private issue and doesn't want to confront the truth, she'll avoid bluntly talking about it/talking about it at all. She's not a cruel bitch, she's just not wasting any time.
She is confident, but aware of her limits. She spent her childhood teaching herself her limits the hard way, including in things like drinking and playing rough. She knows what risks to take, and what risks are fucking stupid to take. She knows the line for when it's worth it to take a fucking stupid risk, but she hasn't done that often. She's deeply disciplined, from years of training. She was raised by a beastcraft mother used to training dogs, and, well, learned the same way. It produces good results.
All of this severity and fire? It's unintentional. She's aware of it only peripherally, because other people have told her about it. She cultivates none of it- it's just the way she is. She's always watchful, wary, and on-guard. That said, she's also deeply serene, at the same time. It's a serenity borne of knowing what she is and what she's capable of. She takes great comfort from her friends, and from the things she enjoys— canines, felines, nature. These things form a network of stability she can rest on when things get too intense even for her, and that's where her serenity comes from.
Like the dogs she grew up with, loyalty is deep and ingrained. Blood isn't thick enough to warrant automatic trust- you have to prove yourself to her as worthy of her loyalty, even if you are part of her family. This isn't THAT hard to do— if she respects you, you're on the right track. She does respect, love and trust most of her family.
She's not very cold or emotionally barbed, either. She is, in fact, very emotionally rich. She doesn't show it often because she's too busy being constantly prepared for life, the universe, and everything (and a little bit because showing emotion makes one vulnerable, which is bad fightin' practice), but she feels and feels strongly. She's not your typical social butterfly, but she's not asocial either. She likes being around people, and she likes feeling emotion. The more comfortable with people she gets, the more emotion she will comfortably show. She'll also show her compassionate sides when she's close to people.
The affection she shows is quiet, but there. She's physically, platonically and in a relationship, and she'll often show her affection with small touches, and her approval with nods and pats on the back. She's maternal, but in a protective way- protect the nest, and nurture from afar- she'll leave the up-close nurturing to her mate. She doesn't really want a family or anything like that, but she doesn't really not want one either— if she ever gets preggo, she'll probably keep it- though she'll be more then happy to have it fostered off to the lower caverns as is weyr custom, and visit in frequently.
Shiya is incredibly sexual. Sex to her is not a power ploy, a game of manipulation, or random burning things off, though she approaches it with the casualness that people who use sex for these ends might. It's always a deeply emotional event, though it doesn't necessarily have to do with romance at all. Sex to Shiya is a way of connecting with people, on an emotional and mental level. To fuck someone, she must feel respect and deep fondness for them. It's a trust thing. She needs to be able to still-respect them in the morning. Barring that, she'll gladly sleep with her friends, because.. well. Trust thing. If she ever gets with a partner who wants singular loyalty, she will be loyal only to them. Until then, sex is a casual, if emotional, event to her. Interestingly, monogamy is her ideal romantic relationship. She will be a possessive lover, but a loyal one. This is because romantic sex is an entirely different animal to her then casual sex.
Shiya is rather impatient. She's not very patient at the best of times, but if something needs to happen, she's especially antsy and tends to snap. She has a tendency to brood on things. She's strong, stubborn, and brave. She's also incredibly, incredibly proud. She knows what she is, and she fucking loves it. She's not vain- she doesn't give a shit of anyone notices or feel the same way. She knows what she is and she's damn fucking proud of everything she is.
History
Shiya comes from a mixed line. Her mother was a beastcrafter, and her father- whom she never met- was a dragonrider. At the time of her conception, her mother was stationed at the weyr as part of her journeywomanship, and she was the product of lost-flight-sex. She spent the first three years of her life at the weyr, before going to Henalt, where she has been since.
The attitudes of that hold have always frustrated her, but Shiya found solace in her mother's calling: working with animals. Her mother was specialized in canines, and bred large guard/hunting canines- huge, muscular mastiff-types who were brave and intelligent. Shiya began helping her mother as soon as she was able, entering into an informal sort of apprenticeship at the age of 8 (her mom taught her everything she knew.) She went into the craft officially at 13, armed with more information then your ordinary apprentice and the knowledge that her ascension through the ranks would likely be slow because of her gender. Such was the status quo for 2 years. Shiya, despite her genuine love of animals and interest in the craft, found the day to day activities of being an apprentice unfortunately dull. Too much focus on herdbeasts and runners, not enough focus on predators like canines and felines.
Shiya was lucky to be searched. She was on an errand to Rebrint when it happened- she just happened to be in the right place at the right time. The green dragon told her she'd make a great candidate, and she jumped on the occasion- finally, a chance to learn about something more interesting then herdbeasts. dragons.
That first hatching she stood for was a failure for her— no impression— as has every hatching since been, but Shiya is a tenacious girl. She's not about to give up. Candidacy may be a lot like apprenticeship, but dragons are much, much more interesting then herdbeasts.

Dragon
Cryoduth
Orchid M Dragon
Now, being the first orchid of dragonkind was well enough for the beast, and he does it most splendidly. Instead of some of the lighter shades that the firelizard cousins take on, this boy has a deep, deep violet base. Almost iridescent purple tones glimmer on his wing-membranes—verging on more bluish indigos there. On his body, though, there's a myriad of details going on. Firstly, down the sides of his neck and body, bursts of lighter purple tones flash hot here and there, with near pinks peppered within the center. More royal colors mark up where his wings joint onto his back, and where the membrane connects to his vast body. Some swirl-looking patterns of that same indigo prevalent on his wings make it onto his chest, dotting over his ribcage in abstract fashions.
Up the length of his neck dark purples, nearly black purples mark it up in think bands, reaching just to underneath his throat. If closely inspected, some dots of the same pink found elsewhere also show up there, giving the hide a near glimmer because of the darker background. His head is mainly untouched, except for the fact that it has that same iridescent shine that's found in the wings. The forelegs of the beast are also a bit odd, having bands of that pink color up the length of the limb where the claws are a near black—although it's not to be mistaken for melanism.
Firelizards
whuff
Green F Firelizard
Bonded to Tegan, Shiya's Dog. Yarly.
A light olive color, the firelizard has a few specks of lighter lime colors wrapping around her head and neck in a web-like fashion. This same bright color swirls around her tail, much like how the pattern on her egg had looked like. The claws of the green turn into a darker, emerald tone— more saturated than the rest of her body, but notably of a darker value than the rest. Her legs are on the shorter side, giving her a near insect like look— think millipede- when scuttling over the ground. This also makes landing from flying a bit difficult, and more often than not it results with the firelizard tumbling to the ground.
Pets

Tegan
Black and White F Wherhound
Tegan is a large canine, heavily built. At her prime, she weighed near 120lbs from bulk alone. Now, at 8, she's lost both bulk and weight, but she keeps up a respectable 100lbs. She's a wherhound, and as such is covered in strong muscle— on earth, she'd be a pit-bull type breed, but with every ounce and more muscle one could normally acquire. Her fur is short and coarse, and primarily a glossy black. She has white markings on her chest, paws, and over her left eye and underbelly. Her muzzle is beginning to gray with age: the only proof, aside from her weight loss, that she's growing older.
Despite her imposing physique, Tegan is a gentle creature. she's always been a very patient animal, especially with children— human puppies, kittens, or actual puppies, she couldn't care less. She's affectionate and enjoys the attention of humans, especially a good ear scratch now and again. She's just a great-tempered dog. As she ages, she's loosing her puppyish energy, but she's usually perfectly willing to play if the human in question is willing to deal with her slightly slower pace. She's growing arthritic and moves stiffly.
