Name: F'rix
Nickname: Rix
Pre-impression name: F'rix

Position: Weyrling
Past Ranks: Journeyman Harper, Informant/journalist/spy/thingy, holdless, traveler, apprentice harper

Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pan

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Rixfar is, when it comes down to it, downright weird looking. Tan skin and large features, his nose is just a little bit too big for his face, which is otherwise angular. His eyes are large and brown, with wild red hair that grows in waves. That hair is usually down to his chin at least, and frequently tangled up; he keeps it back in a ponytail to make it easier. He looks older then he is, thanks to his relatively harsh lifestyle. He certainly doesn't look like a harper, and wears nothing to designate his rank or even membership in a craft of any kind. at 6', he's fairly tall, and his body is angular and long, with all of his limbs covered in lithe muscle.

Personality

Rixfar is a traveler, an information gatherer, and the closest thing to a true journalist that you can find on pern.

The man is possessed of a deep and gnawing wanderlust. It's been there all his life, drawing away at him. When he was young, he'd explore as much as possible, and was uncomfortable sleeping in his own room. He doesn't like staying in one place too long; it makes him nervous and uneasy. He'll stay somewhere for at most two months, before the gnawing starts getting to him and he wants to get away. At this point he'll get irate and snappish, becoming something of a sarcastic ***.

Which isn't to say he can't do it; it's not like he's been wandering his whole life. He went through harper training, after all. But his attachment to places isn't the same as most peoples' is, and he likes getting out and seeing new things. It's partially the nature of his job, which he deeply enjoys, and partially just what he is. He does get attached to people, though; he'll make friends in various places, and visit them often when he's in the area. It's a good degree of what influences his decisions.

Harper trained, Rixfar's constant movement is an element of his job. He's constantly out gathering information; if he spends a considerable time in one place, it's usually to uncover the full story. This is his journalist aspect, though for him, the real story is the travel itself.

His job takes different forms depending on what the situation is; in more benign circumstances, he will be in the territory of a holder whom he has some loyalty, and, if asked, he will go around and visit cotholders in the area and report back to the holder. Other times, he'll be getting information the masterharper or other harper masters asked him to get— check up on crom, for instance, or see how the whers are doing x location. Several times, he'll wander until he finds something interesting to report back to whoever he's reporting to at the time, and even if he finds nothing, he'll send messages of his travels. These are usually excerpts of his personal journal, and in this way are pretty disjointed narratives of events, but if he's doing a request, it will be more polished then that.

Other times, he's doing something considerably more covert, and this is where his other skills come in; he' can act pretty well, so if he needs to go under cover, he can. If the job doesn't involve going undercover, but involves getting delicate information out in other ways, he can figure out what strings to pull and get that information out to people. In this element, he is more of a spy then a journalist.

To whom he is loyal is a good question, and frequently one the people to whom he is loyal wonder themselves. He has a lot of loyalties to the harper hall- primarily the masterharper, and several other harper masters (the latter of which he deals more often.) Only specific masters, however— not just any harper master can request his services. He has some loyalties to specific holds, though they rarely extend past the realm of basic are-these-cotholders-alive-and-okay jobs. He maintains fairly strong connections through the weyrs, through weyrwomen specifically. If certain weyrwomen ask him to do something, there's a good chance he'll do it. It's interesting to note that he has absolutely no interest in weyrleaders, though it's nothing to do with the genders of the riders- weyrleaders' terms of leadership are only solid until the next queen's flight.

Rix has a pretty strong sense of social justice; he likes the individual, and doesn't like to see anyone repressed. He's lived in what most people consider to be a vile position— holdless— so he's come to appreciate people on their own terms. He doesn't like to see other people being stepped on, or mistreated in any way. It makes him not like people, which is fitting; he's occasionally something of a misanthrope.

Rixfar may be harper trained, but he is not what anyone conventional would call a good person. He's pretty crude, for one thing, and has little patience for attempting to play to a higher class or anything like that. If he doesn't respect you, he's not going to act like he does. He curses to rival any sailor, he'll make that crude joke, and he'll start raving nonsense, if the mood strikes him, just to freak you out. If things start getting wild and heavy and crazy, he'll go with it, to the point of doing reckless and dangerous things in the name of the experience. He can be dark, too, tormented by all the messed up things in the world, and rant about it.

It's interesting to note that he is a profoundly sensitive soul— whenever he gets really upset about how the world works, it's not about things that are happening to him— he's living exactly the lifestyle he wants to. It's about other people's suffering, or about how messed up people can be, how messed up he himself can be. The internal parts of his mind can get pretty convoluted and wild, at times.

He's got a number of vices, and he absolutely revels in them.

He has a thing for drinking. Any way to alter his mind, he will take advantage of at least once, and his poison of choice is frequently the most common available: hard drink. He'll get absolutely plastered and go on with whatever he's doing; he considers it an enhancement, of sorts.

Anything that could possibly be used for gambling, he will take advantage of. Anything to do with the odds of something, he'll take a bet, with anyone who will take it up on it. Cards, dice, anything remotely open to chance? Sure, he'll play the odds. It's partially a fascination with entropy and chaos, but he'll throw down for some serious gambling, when the thought strikes him.

He's also not shy about fighting, either. He won't usually start things of his own accord, but if a challenge is made, he's not going to back down. It's kind of part of the game, when you're holdless; even if you aren't one of the renegades, it's inevitable that at some point, you WILL tussle with one.

Money doesn't last with him; he's got enough to buy himself food (most of which goes to his firelizards), and maybe some nice baubles for his 'lizards, but the rest of it won't stick around. That's actually how he likes it, however— he'll often say how zenlike it is to not have tons of money. It's almost as if he's taken a vow of poverty, but without moral reasons. Thankfully, he's learned a skill or two on the road— he can forage a decent meal, and occasionally a trap he'll set will come up with something at least partially edible.

Though it may be debatable, he does sign on to a set of morals— just not, you know, everyone else's morals. He doesn't kill people, he doesn't deliberately harm people, and his ultimate goal is freedom. He's got a strong sense of duty to pern and to the little people of pern, and he seeks to help them by providing information. It's why he'll take under-cover jobs into holdless organizations, to warn holders of where they're going to raid next, or such things.

Rixfar carries a few things with him at all times, and he considers these things very close to him. the first is a thick, mostly-blank book he writes in as frequently as he gets the occasion to, which would make for a very interesting read if he ever let it out of his sight. It's out of this book that the messages he sends come. He also has two firelizards whom he adores, who see almost exclusively the sweeter, sensitive side of him.

History

His wanderlust was present from a young age. He was the product of an affair between a bronzerider and a holder woman, and he was frequently fostered back and forth between weyr and hold. He'd spend most of his time wandering around the hold, whenever he could, and would go as far as to sleep in different places because sleeping in the same room all the time felt oppressive. at 12, he went into the harper hall, and did fairly well, though his marks weren't as good as they could've been. He was distracted frequently. These tendencies in him were noted, and taken advantage of; rather then focus on singing and teaching and other harper-specific tasks, he immediately was sent in a direction of study that focused more on discussions of morality (Which he largely ignored, or seemed to), writing, the law, acting, and, later on, covert operations. This improved his studies considerably.
Largely by luck, he managed to impress two firelizards at the age of 15- these two were immediately integrated into his studies, using tasks they showed promise in already. the brown, who was sturdy and reliable, was trained as a message-carrier. The green, who was unruly and had a fondness for biting, proved to be an excellent lookout, of sorts.
Before he'd attained his journeyman status, the meteor shower struck. The harper hall escaped the worst of the damages— though there were several casualties— but he saw first-hand the devastation wrought in the weyr.
He kept studying, and at 18 walked the tables as a journeyman harper. Immediately, his traveling began, and from there his status quo has been a lack of status quo— at any given point, he's in a different area in pern, though he tends to keep a fairly close circle to the weyrs and the holds, if possible; being caught out in a threadfall is NOT on his to-do list.

Dragon

Green Wilenth
Wilenth is the perfect example of a Green. Her coloring is a mild coloring with only a darkening of it to the tip of her tail and headknobs. She is pure femininity, slender, graceful and looking to be an agile flyier when matured. Her wings are a nice size for her, even as she matures, they will grow into a nice size that will be proportionate to her own size of 33 feet.
