Consise/Basics

Name: L'harn
Nickname:

Position: Grounded retired rider
Past Ranks: Smith hallbrat, smith apprentice, candididate, weyrling, rider, wingsecond, wingleader

Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pan

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Hair color: Grey
Eye color: Brown
Build: Thin

Tall and thin, L'harn has always been a lanky man. He's 5'9", with long limbs which only seem to grow longer with age, as he looses more weight. His hair is completely grey and he keeps it shoulder length. L'harn's eyes are a warm brown color, and the expression on his face, more often then not, is a warm smile. He has scars on his arms from old fights and training accidents- most notably a long, white scar running from his shoulder to his elbow where Dekeigth accidentally cut him, right before impression. He tends to wear clothes suited to explorations in the wild, though he doesn't do much of that anymore.

Personality

Likes: Weyrlings, Candidates, flitters, Healers, nice people
Dislikes: Being useless, that they're not active, people who give him odd looks because of Dekeigth's wing, pity and cruelty
Fears: That he and Dekeigth will be useless for their lives, thread
Goals: To make himself useful despite Dekeigth's wound, to prove his worth
Quirks Likes telling long-winded stories, enjoys hanging out with weyrlings despite his age.

L'harn, like his dragon, is an old soldier- but he has taken the better outlook on life.

He's naturally a gentle man, only spurned to violence as a last resort, when he absolutely has to. He's compassionate and would much rather resolve issues through peaceful means.

L'harn is also a realist, and knows that not everything can happen as they'd wish it— he'd be an idealist, if not for that heavy weight of reality that weighs on his mind. He's been through a lot, and he's jaded- moreso now then ever. He puts on a more chipper face then Dekeigth, but he feels the loss of his dragon's wing as much as his dragon does.

L'harn was conventionally trained as a smith, and continued to dabble in the arts even after he became a rider. With Dekeigth's being permanently grounded, he again took up the art even in his age. He mostly does repairs to weapons or other small things, occasionally forging ornamental knives or swords.

One of the things being a smith taught him was how to find multiple ways around a problem, and that has stayed with him his entire life. He's witty, but that's probably not going to come out in sarcasm or funny retorts as it might in others. Nor will the considerable cunning he possesses show itself through subversive action or unjust doing- no, both of these traits will manifest in finding ways around situations then just forward. He doesn't charge and plow through if that's not an option- he finds ways around the issues, and he turns this ability to think outside the box to basically everything around him. He can be a downright tricky little bastard, when he wants to be, but he turns these tendencies towards being unconventional rather then being cruel. His biggest project for these tendencies is to find out how he and his dragon can be of use, but he's a decent strategist and his ways of going around problems prove useful whenever he can apply them.

Like his dragon, he is very, very loyal. The weyr and his family come first. He's not so devout as his dragon is— he's much more willing to lie to a commander for the good of the nation as a concept, or to cross a commander or break the chain of command if the reason is good enough— but if he hasn't got a REALLY good reason, he's still going to follow the chain of command. He'll go to the ends of the earth for his home and his people. If that means doing what he's told, he'll do what he's told. If that means overstating dangers to discourage a young and reckless commander from sending unprepared wings into the field, he'll do that.

L'harn is an old man, and he has a lot of stories. He loves telling stories. For the most part, they're old "war stories"— about old sweeps he did, finding raiders or defusing situations with rogue holds or traders at each other's throats. Many of his stories involve more diplomatic victories then anything else. He can be a bit long-winded, and there aren't very many people who will indulge his fondness for storytelling, but when he can find them, he cherishes the situation. IT's part of the reason he likes children and candidates. Both parties are usually so eager for information about dragons that they'll listen to almost anything.

L'harn is a patient man. If you're willing to try, he's willing to give you a chance, and see you through the mistakes you make. He's appropriately affectionate— he's not going to go around giving everybody hugs or anything that might be inappropriate, but he'll show he's fond of people with compliments and general friendliness, and maybe the occasional pat on the back. He's not really contact oriented, and even less so since Dekeigth lost his wing and thus the ability to take part in flights.

L'harn is a brave man, and can take hurdles that are physical and ones that are emotional. He's less fierce then his dragon, but no less tenacious. He's also good with responsibility. Need something done? L'harn can do it, with patience to match Dekeigth's tenacity. His first loyalty is to the people under his command, then to his weyr. He's intelligent and likes to put his mind to good use.

L'harn is not very intimidating, and he doesn't try to be. He's very approachable, and he likes it that way. He's friendly and good company, and very willing to be encouraging and warm when someone needs a bit of a pick-me-up.

L'harn is prone to the same worries of uselessness as his dragon is, though he internalizes them more. He's constantly seeking a way to make himself useful.

History

L'harn was born into the smithcrafthall, and pursuing smithery was as natural for him as breathing. He entered into an apprenticeship at 11, and showed great promise to go on and graduate, right up until he was unexpectedly searched by a visiting cousin, who'd recently impressed a blue.

The call of family at Fort weyr and the idea of riding a dragon was too much to resist, so at 14 he went off for his cousin, and with his luck he Impressed Dekeigth. As an added bonus, the brown hatched and impressed on his birthday.

Things were great for a long time. The two went through weyrlinghood and graduated with honors. They soon took the position of wingsecond, and, when L'harn turned 32, was promoted to the leader of a small wing— something that pleased both himself and his dragon.

Things changed with L'harn turned 55. Slowing down, they were getting to the point where they would soon give up wingleading— if grudgingly, on Dekeigth's part— so someone younger could take the job. It was to happen by unfortunate force, however: a training accident sped the process along. Dekeigth was unlucky enough to catch a badly-aimed accidental blast of fire from a young, freshly-graduated blue to the left wing. He was burned badly, and the healers did what they could.

For a short while, they thought he might make a recovery— but age was not on his size, and Dekeigth got an infection in the wound. It caused a horrible fever, and he almost died— but in the end, he recovered, though the wing had become necrotic and had to be amputated. Thus began Dekeigth and L'harn's life as a flightless dragon pair.

It was a major, major blow to the pair, and they've been in the process of recovery since. L'harn keeps a outlook, and is the reason Dekeigth has recovered as far as he has, but it's still always in their minds what they can't do anymore.

Dekeigth
Brown M Dragon
Dekeigth might put someone in mind of a terran doberman, if they met both creatures. He's average size for a brown, but he stands with pride, giving him the appearance that he's bigger then he actually is. He has long, pointed features, and a severe expression. His stature is imposing and proud. He's muscular, but since the loss of his wing he doesn't get as much exercise as he needs to, and is getting a little pudgy around the haunches- something he is incredibly upset about. Further, with age he has begun to move stiffly, as arthritis sets into his legs.
