Consise/Basics
Name: Mari
Nickname: Riri
Position: candidate
Past Ranks: Holdbrat, Fishercraft Apprentice
Gender: Female
Sexuality*: Pansexual
- Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.
Looks
Fairly short even for a Pernese woman, Mari is only about 5'1". Her hair comes to her shoulders, is a pleasant light brown, and has natural wave to it. Her eyes are hazel, frequently reflecting a lot of the colors around her, and her skin is creamy. She's built lightly, and is usually smiling.
Personality
Likes: Cats, Fishing, Water, Cooked fish, shiny bits
Dislikes: Getting told off, not being allowed to swim, being cooped up, unfriendly people, getting bitten by insects
Fears: The death of her family, Thread
Goals: Reproduce, Make and maintain good friends.
Quirks Though she's the voice of reason, she often follows Peregrip's bad example, and she secretly likes making mischief.
She and her cousin Peregrip come as a pair, though Mari acts the foil and the voice of reason most frequently.
Though both are insatiable mischief makers, Mari is usually the one of the pair to hold back— all of the things they get into? Totally Peregrip's idea. She's just along for the ride, to be honest.
She enjoys having a good time, and having fun with those around her— it's this and her trust, perhaps misplaced, in her cousin that leads to her involvement in his mischievous schemes. When it gets down to it, her motivations are also to have a good time: she isn't very resentful of most of the bad ideas Peregrip has, even the ones that get her into trouble— she'll only ACTUALLY get mad at him if he does something incredibly stupid on his own. She's social and likes the company of others, and enjoys singing, dancing, and drinking— especially at the same time.
She is wiser then her cousin, and usually the one to think before she leaps. She considers the consequences of her actions, and makes the determination as to whether or not she wants to pay the price. If she's assigned a task, she can usually be counted on to complete it on time: she might dawdle a bit, on the way, but she'll usually get it done. Eventually.
She frequently function as Peregrip's foil. He tells her everything, and if he is going to do something that she thinks is especially stupid— she'll say so, and he'll usually listen. If they've gotten into trouble and he's wondering why, she'll calmly list off the things they've done to get there, and he'll go 'ah.'
Mari is casual and laid-back. She doesn't like fighting, and she doesn't like getting into terribly dangerous situations— they just don't seem much use to her. Why spend time with strife when you can enjoy yourself? That said, she'll dig her heels in if it's something she cares about: her loyalty is incredibly strong, and she has a surprising amount of bravery. One wouldn't expect her to face down a bully for someone, but if she's in the spot she will. She's also surprisingly stubborn, if she chooses to dig her heels in.
Though she's not quite as outgoing as Peregrip is, she's fairly social and outgoing— she can be expected to be friendly, but since Peregrip is more likely to make the social extensions to strangers, she's more then willing to sit back and let him do that, and greet them when if they respond.
One slight conflict within Mari is her connection to family— on one hand, she wants a family. She does want, at some point, to breed and raise children— preferably with a mate or someone she can count on by her side. At the same time, the domestication of such a lifestyle disgusts her: she wants to have adventures and have a great time, unfettered by such responsibility. She seeks a way to find some sort of balance- she certainly has no intention of not having adventures just because she's got some spawn at home.
History
Mari and Peregrip were born into the same large family. The extended family lived generally together- cousins, aunt, uncles, grannies, all of it with the immediate family, and no difference was made between cousins and brothers. Mari was born 4 years before Peregrip, but the two of them grew up together and were very close friends, making mischief everywhere.
Otherwise, their childhoods were relatively normal. Mari got involved with the fishercraft, taking after her side of the family, at the age of 12— her involvement was small, generally limited to small boats near the shore: nothing like her father, who'd take large boats out for longer periods of time. Peregrip considered the craft, and gave apprenticeship a try when he was 12, but only lasted a year: it was too boring. He was much more given to the harper crafts, and informally flirted with the idea of going into the craft until he was 15.
Shortly after Mari's 20th turnday, while Peregrip was still 15, everything changed. The disasters began happening— small at first, but increasing in fervor. It was enough to make everyone nervous.
Luck was on their side: when the tidal wave that destroyed their hold began making it's way to shore, they were well away: assisting taking a delivery of fish to the weyr. They didn't learn of the disaster until well after, when a rider returned with a report of the damages— the hold was destroyed, they had nowhere to return to.
It was devastating. As far as they knew, none of their large family had survived— they only had each other, further bringing them closer. The weyr graciously opened it's doors to them, and they took the offer— it wasn't as if they had anywhere to go.
This turned out to be the wise decision. Not terribly long after the tidal wave wrecked their hold, thread fell again, destroying large sections of pern's population, the great dragons included. The rest of the holders were herded into the weyr. Mari and Peri looked for their family amongst the survivors, but came up empty.
That's where they've been, since. Mari has been looking for something to replace the fishercraft— she's been tentatively looking at the whers. They both stood at the last hatching, of fourteen eggs, though neither Impressed— Peri, never willing to give up, is ready to stand again- Mari isn't quite as sure.
