Mali - BlueMist

Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Mali is a small woman, about 5'4". Her frame carries some extra weight- a product of eating well and having many children- but she carries it well, making it look natural and attractive. Her skin is a mid-tan tone, and her eyes are hazel. Her hair is auburn, and falls to about her shoulders naturally, though she frequently wears it back in a ponytail.

In clothing, she prefers things that are comfortable. Her vanity has eased itself away with age, changing her focus to things which are practical. The colors she tends to wear are greens and earthtones, and she always has a few pieces of jewelry on her at all times: a necklace, given to her from A'zreal, and some bangles on her wrist. Despite the extra weight she caries, she moves with purpose and physical strength: she is a dragonrider, and she has the muscles to handle the job.

Personality

You know those women who naturally have this sense of gravitas around them, who rule their surroundings with with a very feminine iron fist? Yeah. Mali is one of those people.

She is pretty good at dealing with chaos, and forcing the chaos around her into some semblance of order. Perhaps this is because she grew up in a weyr, and then immediately jumped into the healer hall, with a certain insane fondness for triage. All of these things are chaotic, but have strong-minded individuals behind them, making sure they function. She is willing to be that strong-minded individual. She knows you can't stop the wider chaos, but you can at least make it flow in a direction.

For that reason, she comes off as kind of fierce. She carries herself with purpose. She's not always glaring or anything, but you can usually tell that she's here to do a thing, and that you probably don't want to get in her way. Especially when she's actually in work-mode, she'll pursue what she's doing with a single-minded ferociousness.

She likes to keep busy. Even when Mali isn't doing something that you could call work, she's doing something productive. Knitting, absently cleaning up behind people, even when that isn't her job- anything. Many kitchen staffers and people who eat with her have given up telling her it's not her job to clear the plates away. She does it automatically, because that's what she was trained to do, and because the alternative is sitting around doing nothing. Needless to say, she works hard, and she's incredibly devoted.

Mali can kind of be a busybody, especially in subjects she knows very well. She's good at first aid, triage, and general health maintenance. Thus, she is forever dispensing advice about these things. That's great, if you need or want it, but it can be obnoxious since she'll give it unbidden. Whether you asked for it or not, you'll get comments on what to do about that cut, or suggestions to go see a healer since you're not looking your best today, or perhaps you should eat some more greens, dear.

Mali is an incredibly maternal person. This is true of things that aren't her own kin, of things that are older then her, or of things that aren't human. It's been true since she was a teenager. Do you breathe? then she will very happily mother you. It just comes naturally to her. She is the sort of person who wishes to nurture things and help them reach their potential. It's not even something she does consciously.

All of this doesn't mean that she doesn't know how to relax. On the contrary, she knows the importance of relaxation to the human psyche, and she's sure to make time to do so and stay stress free. One of her favorite activities is napping, for instance. However, she isn't lazy, and she is absolutely sure to make sure everything she needs to do is done by the time she wants to go relax. Only then is she free to go off and nap, or spend some quality time with her kids, or do something else relaxing.

I realize as I type this that she unintentionally reminds me of a poem written by TS eliot, in Old Possum's book of Practical Cats. The Old Gumbie Cat. It can be read here.
An excerpt: ' have a Gumbie Cat in mind, her name is Jennyanydots;/ Her coat is of the tabby kind, with tiger stripes and leopard spots./ All day she sits upon the stair or on the steps or on the mat; / She sits and sits and sits and sits—and that's what makes a Gumbie Cat!
But when the day's hustle and bustle is done, / Then the Gumbie Cat's work is but hardly begun. / And when all the family's in bed and asleep, / She tucks up her skirts to the basement to creep. / She is deeply concerned with the ways of the mice/ Their behaviour's not good and their manners not nice; / So when she has got them lined up on the matting, /She teachs them music, crocheting and tatting."
Mali is a lot like that.

Rest assured that she means well. Everything she does, she does to improve people's lives. She likes people. People should be happy, and to be happy they need to be healthy and have things to do. Thus, she tries to make people healthy and give them things to do.

Mali is somewhat set in her ways. She has her ideas about what's good for people and what they ought to be doing, and she will probably not change them. However, she's not totally the preachy type- though she's perfectly happy to share her opinions, she's not going to run around with her teeth bared until someone listens to her. On the contrary, the most she'll usually do is purse her lips and give a disapproving look. That is, for most people. Even A'zeal will get that response.

Her children, however? That's a different case, because it's her job to teach them how to be good human beings. She will be at odds with her children who aren't doing what she thinks is a good idea, or something she doesn't approve of, and will make that clear. Oh, she won't stop loving them, and she won't let it get in the way of their relationship: she'll just nag and be a bit obnoxious with it, and try to quell the idea here and there. She'll never force her kids to do much of anything, and if they prove her wrong with their life's goals, then all the better. However, she's still going to make her disapproval clear.

Mali does not suffer fools. She is patient when she needs to be— when she's dealing with someone with whom being impatient would be counterproductive, or someone who needs more gentle treatment. however, if you're just dicking around or making a fool of yourself, she has nothing but harsh words for you. If someone is goofing off detrimentally while she's trying to work, their retribution is a lecture and banishment. She doesn't need people around acting like feral wherries when she's trying to get something done, thank you very much! Nonsense is something else she doesn't tolerate. She wouldn't much understand the dada art movement in the real world, even if it hit her upside the head with meaning. In her day to day life, nonsense will at best get her to give you an odd and unfriendly look.

Don't try to lie to her. A naturally honest person, Mali can't stand lairs. It's one of the very worst things you can possibly do in her eyes, and it will set her off for hours, complete with lectures and rants and a lingering bad temper that will follow her throughout the day. If she catches you, she will never respect you again- or, at least, it will be hard to win her respect back.

She does tend to treat people fairly, and respect people most of the time off the bat. She's willing to give most people the benefit of the doubt and treat them seriously. She's only uncivil to those who have proved to her to be worth that behavior. Indeed, she's going to assume you're a capable and reasonable person until you prove her otherwise.

As mentioned, Mali was a healer apprentice trained in triage and first aid. If there's something she knows how to do well, it's take charge of a situation and start getting things back under control. Crisis? Psh. What crisis. She's good at keeping her head under those. Oh, the gravity of the situation will not escape her- but when you have people going through triage, what they need is someone who can sit there calmly, direct them where they need to go, and handle anything immediately life threatening— not someone who's going flipping out and screaming 'oh faranth what do i do.' While she can be bossy ordinarily, this is the situation where that trait shines.

That ability to command would make her a decent leader. She's capable at directing people and very practical, and she'll do what needs to be done- even if it's a hard call. She may regret it, she may fuss over it, but in the end she'll err in the direction of the greater good. If that makes her loose anyone, she will hurt and mourn and hold it against whatever took it away, being a more formidable opponent then she already was, but she would not change what she did if she were given a chance to do it again.

She's not likely to seek a position of power, however. she's not that ambitious, and it's not really something she's ever had on her goals. She also doesn't have a mind at all for politics, which would probably wound her in such a position: she'd do great as a practical leader, but she wouldn't watch out or bow down to political pressures, which might cause issues for the weyr.

Mali is protective. If she cares about it, she's willing to protect it, and here's where her ferocious guard-dog attitude pops up. You threaten her weyr, and she'll threaten you back. You make good on it, and so will she. You threaten her family, and she will tear your throat out. She holds the things she cares about as sacred, and is willing to devote that sort of fanaticism to protecting them. It doesn't matter what the obstacle is, either- she's a brave woman. She worries frequently about things- the weyr, her family- and that makes her more willing to protect them.

She is damn proud, too. Of herself, of her family, of her weyr- if she's willing to protect it, she's proud of it, and she's not afraid to say so. She's especially proud of her family, even should her children decide to go off in different directions she doesn't approve of. That would mean they had the Independence to stand up for their mother and decide what they wanted to do, and she's proud of that.. even if she doesn't like dealing with it so much.

She's a very devoted woman, naturally. This is especially true of her family, who she adores. One of the greatest things she's guilty about, in fact, is that she isn't raising her family as a non-dragonrider might. She, like many dragonriders, elected to foster off her children to the lower caverns. She does, however, take a very active part in their lives, and is sure to go be around them when time permits. The trials of being a dragonrider and the sacrifices you have to make are things she made willingly, because she needed to.

Mali is not all protective venom and capable triage-director: she's also a sweet and gentle person. That's the primary reason she went into the healing field at all. She wanted o heal people, to make them better. She's empathetic, and she hates seeing things in pain. It was the most natural thing in the world for her to go into a field where she would make things' pain lessen, and/or protect them. Unfortunately she just chose a method of doing that that means she would be exposed to their pain in a very real way on a regular basis.. but in the name of making it better.

Mali is affectionate. If she likes you, you'll know it. Hugs, warm shoulder pats, kisses on the cheek, that sort of thing. She's also not shy about paying compliments and admiration- just as much as she believes you should tell people off when they've done wrong, she believes that you should talk them up for doing good. People can't grow without feedback. Mali is very warm: everything she does, even when she's being commanding or bossy, is done with a sort of natural warmth. You can tell she's doing it because she cares, even if it makes you want to stab her in the face.

No bones about it, Mali is a Matriarch. In another life, she'd've made healing master or headwoman capably. Instead she Impressed Aith, and she wouldn't have it any other way.

MAli is both organized and clean. She was prior to Impressing Aith, and the green dragon's mildly neurotic tendencies make it even more important. Everything in her weyr is neat, organized, and has a place to go— even A'zeal.

History

Mali's history is not particularly interesting. She was born in the weyr, a product of flightlust and a lower caverns woman. She was happy enough as a weyrbrat, always making herself the leader and mother-figure of her fellow age-mates. Her fondness for healing showed itself early, and as soon as she was capable she went to the healer hall to do an apprenticeship.

she did well there, but she secretly yearned for home. She was homesick, and the hall was a wildly different place then the weyr was. Nevertheless, she stuck through it as long as she can, eventually coming home for what was supposed to be a brief visit at the age of 15. While at the Trelis, her mother convinced her to stand as a candidate for the upcoming clutch, and she slowly agreed— after all, the chances of impression were fairly low, and she could return to her apprenticeship when it was over.

That was not to be: Green Aith, after getting quite upset on the sands about how much of a mess hatching made, decided Mali belonged to her, changing the course of Mali's life forever. They went through weyrlinghood together, and graduated- things have been fairly normal.

She's been in a relationship with A'zeal for about 16 years now. It was off-and-on at the beginning, but has stabled out since, and A'zeal has fathered all of her children. Though they were fostered off to the lower caverns, Mali and A'zeal take as active a role in their lives as dragonriding permits.

Dragon

Green F Dragon
Aith is a small green, with a light build. Her features are long, and kind of willowy, which actually makes her look all the more fragile thanks to her small size. Most of her body is a deep forest green, evenly spread out across limbs, torso and wings. It's only broken by point markings that look as if they were dipped in mint-chocolate-chip ice cream: the tip of her muzzle, her wingspars, her tail and back toes are all lightly coated in it. Her front legs get more of the color, in markings more like socks, and it's also splashed on her chest. Aith has a jagged scar across the top of her muzzle where a fellow hatchling got her across the face: it is old and healed, but nevertheless gnarly, proof of how nasty the original cut was
