Consise/Basics

Name: Lystor
Nickname: Lys

Position: Candidate
Past Ranks: Bastard son of a lord holder, illegitimate hold-brat, guardsman

Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pan

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Eye Color: Grey
Hair Color: Brown
Height: 6'3"

Tall, Lystor is 6'3". He's muscular from his time in the guard, which produces more bulky muscle then the lithe muscle of the riders. He works out regularly to keep it up. His face is square, but his features soft and gentle. His nose is thin, and his lips full. His eyes are large and pale grey. His hair is short and brown, kept trim thanks to the guard. His skin is fair, and he favors durable clothing suitable for work.

In fashion, Lystor is odd. He kind of prefers to wear leather, because it reminds him of armor, which makes him feel safe. That said, he usually goes without more then, say, a leather coat when it's warm. He enjoys wearing shades of red and grey. Most of his clothing is not fine, though he does own a set of gather-clothes, and he usually is anarmed. He has no scars which are notable.

Personality

Quirks: believes in a general vague concept of good in the world, stutters when talking to girls who intimidate him.
Fears: Rejection of any kind, dying alone.

Lystor is a sweet-heart. A formidable sweetheart, thanks to his training in the guard, but really, that's only physical: if he had his way, Lystor wouldn't know the definition of the word 'stranger.' He's gregarious and friendly, and willing to give just about anyone a chance. Really, he's more of a lover then a fighter.

Not, of course, that he won't fight. He is the son of a lord, and he was trained in the guard. He is a skilled hunter and a skilled hand-to-hand fighter both, and will spar regularly to keep his strength up, until he Impresses and it's disallowed. He only truely duels for honor, however, and avoids frivolous fights and mindless shows of strength. He is humble, and thinks that the true strength is knowing when to be physically strong and when to be emotionally strong. His high blood has instilled in him some traits— naturally the sort that would tends toward idealism and developing a sense of right and wrong, his high breeding has only furthered this: he is deeply just, and has very strong beliefs on what is right and what is wrong. This is mostly humanitarian: he will NOT stand for people going after those weaker then themselves, or people disrespecting women or harpers, or such things. He's chivalrous, and deeply respects women. He is slightly progressive, because he knew and accepted women in the guard, so he knows that not ALL of them seek a domestic life. His morality comes from his blood as well: Duty is important. One must do one's duty to Pern, even if you don't want to: he was always a proponent of his father's tithing, even if he knew his father hated it. He himself harbored some reservations of the weyr, until they were dispelled from experience.

Outside of aspects of morality, his highbloodedness did not leave much of an impression on him. He has no aspirations of greatness, for instance. He wasn't 100% pleased with his job as a guardsman, but he was content not to be in a leadership position. He's a powerful second and someone capable of conducting plans, but really, he'd rather not be in the position to hatch them himself. He works with Kanis well because she formulates the plan of actions, and he can carry them out. He's not stupid, and it's not that he /can't/ do it— he just really, really doesn't want to. He does have opinions, and he'd like to voice them— major decisions in his group preferably happen by council— but he does NOT want power, he does NOT want to be leader. He is brave and strong, and willing to do grunt work as much: Lystor does absolutely nothing halfway, and doesn't like to rely on servents or anything else. If he's capable of doing some piece of work, he wants to do it, if only to prove his dedication. He tends to shy away from responsibility.

Lystor is friendly and gregarious. He likes to smile, and he likes to make people smile. He can be goofy, but is willing to laugh at his own expense. He has a sense of humor and likes telling jokes— occasionally bad ones, but hey, he tried. He tends to be sarcastic, but his sarcasm lacks teeth— where other's peoples sarcasm can be nasty and painful, his is friendly and happy, and rarely offensive. He's as often a butt of his jokes as anyone else is. Even if things are incredibly bad, he tries to be cheerful: he's known the bite of despair and does not want himself or his friends to feel it again, if there's anything he can do about it. He's nice, sweet, and gentle, and will help anyone: the only commonality one needs for him to be on their side is humanity. The deal-breaker for that is being nasty to him, or being someone who errs on his concept of "Wrong"— if he thinks you're a bad person, he'll avoid you and not help you. He does run everything he does through his own morality filters, and needs to be still doing "Good" in his eyes to be comfortable with himself. He generally means well, even if things end badly.

The thing that motivates him primarily is love. Love for his fellow human being, love for the people he's close to. He gets incredibly attached to things, and mourns losses very hard. Some people are motivated by stubbornness: Lystor keeps active seemingly on force of emotion alone, and stays optimistic even in the face of hopeless odds. He tries to see the good in everyone, and he likes it that way: that's why he avoids power. He doesn't want that to change. He's a dreamer, and entertains wistful hopes that he can one day have a family, or one day have done something great for the good of his weyr or his people.. things like that. He'd be a closet romantic, but he left the closet a long time ago: He wants love, he wants companionship, both platonic and especially otherwise. With regards to otherwise, he wants ONE mate, and maybe a family, but someone to come home to and be loyal to and all of that good mushy stuff. Sex too, of course, but that's honestly more of a perk in his eyes: this is partially from a holder lifestyle, which tends towards marriage, and partially from a simple want to be romantic. He knows, of course, that this domestic lifestyle will not happen (he doesn't even want an entirely domestic lifestyle: he wants to have adventures and excitement until he is old, which is part of the reason he finally accepted to be Searched), but he does hope to find someone to be at his side through all his adventures.

Outside of the whole romantic thing, he is still motivated by people and groups of people. He's social, and he wants somewhere he belongs: he wants to be accepted and valued for who and what he is. He's a do-gooder, and is incredibly selfless. He's also gullible, and can be easily manipulated. His morality can get in the way of what he needs to do. He doesn't forgive people he finds unjust, and can be rather childish in his unwillingness to associate with them. He can be more then a little bit awkward, especially when it comes to getting close to people and sex. He's reluctant when it comes to responsibility and major changes, for all he likes adventure and excitement. He's humble, and refuses to aknowledge his strengths very much, and he complains frequently: though mostly in a light-hearted way. He's incredibly talkative, especially when drunk, and the poor boy can't hold his liquor.

It's also interesting to note that his transition to weyr-life is somewhat rocky. An 'innocent little holder boy', his words, he's a virgin, and probably will be until the first flight he wins. He makes fun of himself for his nervousness about sex, but it's undeniably there: the concept of flightsex is confusing to him (though he'll undoubtedly deal with it somewhere if/when he Impresses). He comes from a world where getting with a girl involves chivalry and a long wooing process— the openness of the weyr is a completely foreign world.

History

Lystor has a history that is shameful, that he can do nothing of. The shame is in his birth: he is the first child of a lord holder, but he is a bastard child: more shameful then being simply a bastard child. His mother was a scullery drudge, and his father the lord of a relatively minor independent holding. He spent much of his childhood being shunned by this, especially by his father, though he was raised regardless for appearances sake. His brothers, the true heirs, despised him, and his only friends were his milkbrother and his cousins.

As such, Lystor has never been promised power. He was never an heir, and doesn't want to be. He was urged into the guard at the youngest age possible, in order to "make something respectable of himself." He worked hard at it, but didn't seek to make it his true calling: it was really more of a day-job. He enjoyed his social engagements more, and felt happy to be free of responsibility but for what came from the guard.

His father was no sympathizer to the weyr, but grudgingly followed it's practices: he allowed search as little as possible, only when there was a Queen on the sands. When Lystor was 15, searchdragons rode to the hold when he was on duty as a cadet: he was amongst those to greet the dragons and seek to make them comfort. He'd barely approached when a green lowered her head and gave him a good sniff, quickly announcing him to be her first choice for a searchee.

This put him in a bit of a position. His father disliked the weyr, and as such, it would be inappropriate of him— even as an unliked and unwanted bastard son— to go against his wishes and allow himself to be searched. He also had some residual loyalty to the place, even if he didn't want this kind of life, and so the decision was hard to make. The greenrider appealed to his sense of duty, however, his sense of right and wrong, and Lystor reluctantly agreed to go to Lyer.

He found the weyr a welcome change. The rider became a good friend, and eventually his reservations disappeared. He failed on his first attempt as a candidate, but he did not go home: no, he was told it wasn't uncommon, and that he could stay as long as he wanted. Not one to give up, he chose to remain. He has failed every attempt since, but Lystor will stand until he is too old.

His situation with his family has even mended somewhat: when thread first fell over land, his father's lands were hit hard. The main hold did not loose complete electricity, but most of the outer buildings did, and adjusting to life has not been easy. The hold now supports the dragonriders, because the alternative is being left to deal with successive losses thanks to thread without the cover of any protection at all.
