Consise/Basics
Name: Jackyll
Nickname: Kyl
Position: Candidate, Mercenary
Past Ranks: Guard recruit, mercenary
Gender: Female
Sexuality*: Pansexual
- Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.
Looks
Hair color: Black
Eye color: grey
Build: Strong
Jackyll is of relatively average height, at 5'7". She walks with a casual sort of severity: the first impression everyone has of her is that she knows exactly what she's capable of, and that one might not want to trust her. Her face is pointed, with thin features and thin lips which are usually twisted into some version of a sadistic grin. Her eyes are grey, and her skin is pale. Her muscles are wirey, and her form fairly thin- courtesy of living off the land for the past few turns. Her hair is black, but she keeps it mostly shorn, but for two streaks along the crown of her head which she keeps at longer lengths- but short enough that they stand on their own, rising diagonally upwards and then evening out more abruptly.
Personality
Likes: Her knives, no boundries, wide-open-spaces, whers, dogs
Dislikes: Crowds, people who try to appeal to her morality, manipulation, being indoors for too long, broken weapons
Fears: Enclosed spaces, being forced to live by another's morals.
Goals: Make the world safer, make people live more comfortably.
Quirks IDealistic but only to a point, gets irritable when she's been indoors for more then a day strait.
Jackyll is her own creature. She is motivated by her own whims and she does what she wants, regardless of what other people request/say/etc. She'll make the call about who to help, who to work for, and whether to work for anyone at all, thank you very much. She doesn't need anyone steering her life for her, and she's quite proud of the fact that nobody does.
Jackyll is Mercenarial. She works for money. Her loyalty is to whoever pays the best, be that in money or benefits or something else. Of course, she's the final call on what jobs to take, but it's still a mercenary's life for her, which she likes just fine. Certainly it's better and more active then anything the service of the guard had open for her.
Jackyll seeks no power. If the entire weyr was offered to her, she would turn it down. She thinks she would make a horrible leader, and even if that isn't entirely true, she doesn't want the responsibility. Power is shackles that ties you to a place, and Jackyll only wants her freedom. She wants the ability to say 'fuck you' to whatever group hired her, and to be her own ultimate leader. She also doesn't want the risk— the risk of hurting other people, and the risk of assassination. All and all, she thinks it pays better to be an underling- she'll help the leader, she'll offer council and she'll do jobs for them, but she doesn't want that gilded title for herself, thank you very much.
Jackyll has a unique skill-set, as she's quite fond of telling potential employers. Her years at the guard were not in waste: she's learned to be quite good in combat. Her specialty is hand-knives, though she's fair with any kind of bladed weapon. She maintains a knife collection of which she is very fond, and one of her favorite things to do is maintain and clean her knives. She's physically strong, in that wiry way, and can lift, for instance, swords that men bigger then her but with less training would have trouble lifting. Her size is somewhat of a disadvantage, being a limiting factor: there's only so much strength a person her height can garner. That said, she takes advantage of that in that she's fast, as well, though less so the her strength. She's a pretty good fighter.
Jackyll is not just strong physically. She's willful and tenacious. When she sets her mind on a task, she gets it done— not necessarily quietly, but she'll get a job done. She doesn't give up until she's dead, or something else happens to make her change her course. This is sometimes getting a better offer, but more often it's if someone appeals to her morals and convinces her that what she's doing is wrong— easier said then done, especially considering Jackyll's morals.
Jackyll is also surprisingly charismatic. She's pretty intuitive when it comes to people, but more then that, she knows what to pay attention to in order to figure out how people tick. While she'd really rather rely on her skills with weapons to muscle her way through situations (it's less messy, in her opinion), that's not always an option, especially in "polite company." Not everyone is a bandit, and most people in the weyr don't take kindly to being stabbed to make a point. Thus, she's learned to express herself quite clearly, and she can be quite convincing.
She maintains a small, but loyal, friend group. Loyalty is important to her, and it goes both ways: if she counts you as a friend, you have her loyalty, but she'd better have yours. If she's betrayed, it gets personal, and she gets violent. Her charisma and her ability to speak also net her some points when trying to convince people of things, even when she's lying. she knows how to sound truthful.
Jackyll is pretty good at fixing things, but she keeps this skill mostly to her own clothing and weaponry. She's no craftsperson, and what she learned about making repairs she learned on the fly, through maintaining her own gear.
Those are the primary skill-sets that Jackyll offers as a mercenary, and thus she's perfectly happy to show them off. Of course, they serve her well in her non-mercenary life, as well.
In terms of Morals, Jackyll actually has a decent set. They're important to her, and she usually won't take jobs that cross them. She is not excessively cruel. She won't take jobs that lower the quality of life for lots of people as a whole, and she's more likely to take jobs that do good for somebody. She wants the best for the world she lives in.
She is, slightly, a humanitarian. She believes in the general good of mankind and she wants to do well and make their lot better in the longrun. She is not solely idealistic, however: she is strongly tempered by reality. Thread is falling after a series of natural disasters which destroyed Pern. Life isn't nice and friendly, even moreso then it wasn't before. She'd love to be able to give everything she had to some far-off ideal, but she knows it would be a waste of time and energy. She'll help in small ways, but she's not going to go far, far out of her way for anything like that. The most she'll do is small things for the good of people around her.
Jackyll is true neutral. She's mostly out for herself, and if she can help other people along the way, great: otherwise, she's her own priority. She ends up doing good for her community on a regular basis, but she also has a handful of vices which reduce the good that she does. She's something of a kleptomaniac, and if nobody's watching and it's not nailed down, it's hers. She's also fond of prostitutes and mild altering substances. She is, occasionally, a violent drunk. She's a hopeless wanderer, and does not like staying in one place for long periods of time.
Jackyll doesn't often get loyalties to places or people except, perhaps, based on contractual work. When she does, she's very protective of her people. She'll look after Akadii like a guard-dog. She loves her people dearly, and keeps the rest of the world at arm's length. She's fond of healers on a general basis, and will usually do what they need, if they need any help.
History
Jackyll was born to a relatively run-of-the-mill family. Her father had done his time in the guard and spent time telling his children tales of the great things he'd done for people— greatly overstated, of course, but whose tales weren't? Jackyll never thought that greatly of her father, but she was very close to her older brother, znd the concept of glory always appealed to her. Thus, when Nylej, her brother, made his way to the guard, she followed him, hoping to make some kind of name for herself.
What she found, at the age of 10, was something that was more discipline and paperwork then she'd thought. From her father's stories, she thought she'd be off patrolling or all sorts of things— it wasn't further of the truth.
Still, she stayed there, hoping for something to change— maybe when you hit the next rank, or were in the guard long enough, things got interesting. In the meantime she trained, becoming quite proficient with handheld weaponry- especially hand-daggers.
Things did get more interesting, but it had absolutely nothing to do with the guard. The disasters began to happening, a blunt herald to the red-star's return and the return of thread. Soon the population of Pern was being herded into the last remianing weyr: skyguard.
That was all well and good, except for the fact that it was walls. If she thought the guard had been restrictive and crowded, she now experienced that nightmare tenfold. She was a survivor, shard it, she needed to be outdoors. She'd been trained for fighting and wilderness patrols, and now, ironically, when one thought it might be most useful, she didn't get to use it…
She found her own answer to the problem, though, thanks to a silver-tongue and her skills as weapons. The wherhandlers traveled out of the weyr with their beasts- their whers were considered big enough and strong enough to keep their handlers safe. Still, it was better to travel in groups, so she sought out a younger handler and made a proposition: she would find a healer to travel with them, and they'd go together. Jackyll herself would function essentially the same as the wher, only human: a bodyguard and a line of defense, fighting capable. It needed, she would remain while the wher would take the healer and the handler to safety, and fight to the death.
The handler agreed, so Jackyll went off to find a healer, and found one in the form of a self-depreciating man named Akadii.
Their little band traveled successfully together for two turns, until an ironic change of events brought them back to hte weyr. It was not monsters, or raiders, or even the rebels which chased them back- they could probably've handled all of those, with hte exception, perhaps, of banshee-mounted rebels. The wher of their group was bitten by a tunnelsnake, and one of the poisonous variety, while they sought shelter from thread in a tunnel.
Akadii knew enough about healing to stave off the poison, but not well enough. They were near skyguard when it happened— they needed only wait for the end of threadfall. When it finally did came,. they hobbled back to the weyr, making a trip in a day that ordinarily would've taken a third of the time. The wher was sheet-white when they reached the weyr's entrance, and was sped off to the infirmary quickly, distraught handler in tow.
That is where Jackyll enters the game.
