Consise/Basics

Name: J'kol
Pre-impression Name: Jerrikol

Position:Wingrider
Past Ranks: Tannercraft apprentice,

Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pansexual; He leans towards women and considers himself relatively strait, but if a male who matched him came along, he wouldn't need much convincing.

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Of average height, J'kol is a very fit individual. He has a strong frame covered in lithe muscle. His face is warm, with warm brown eyes and full, usually-smiling lips. Black hair grows from his head, either kept in a ponytail, or shorn fairly short. His clothing is all durable and practical, and he always wears a beltknife around his waist, with at least two knives; one hunting knife, and one knife good for ordinary tasks like cutting wood and the like. He has a deep threadscore on his left calf, though it is usually covered by the long pants he tends to wear. It occasionally causes him to limp, especially in cold weather when the muscle is tighter, or at the end of very long days.

Personality

J'kol is a very sturdy individual. On his surface, he makes a rock look unstable.

He possesses a kind of deep-seated serenity that's borne of knowing exactly who he is and wahere he stands in the world. It's a kind of wisdom that comes from being aware of exactly how little of the world you actually know, and being okay with it. There's frequently a little knowing smile on his face, like he's privy to secrets of the universe no one else can hear. Really, it's just a case of him enjoying his serene relationship with the rest of the world, but nevertheless he exudes an atmosphere of confident, calm serenit.y

J'kol gets very attached to places, almost as strongly as he does to people. He genuinely loves any area he considers home, and there are many of those— even places he has only visited, he will love as deeply as home. Especially nature; J'kol adores places untouched by man. Wilderness, twisted trees, wild animals. All of it. He has a deep attachment to the wild world, and he draws a lot of strength from it.

A survivalist, J'kol takes great pride in the fact that he can be completely reliant on himself for survial. He doesn't really need to be attached to a weyr, or anything— if anything, the reason he is is for the protection of his dragon, and to protect the wilderness he loves so much, and the holds and the people of pern. He has a strong sense of loyalty and duty. However, he could be completely autonomous if he needed to. Prior to his search, he was a member of the tannercraft, and would frequently take long expeditions into the wilderness to survive and rough it. He would return to the crafthall in a matter of days or weeks, with skins he'd acquired, and a newly renewed connection to the world. As such, he's got survival skills— he knows how to treat relatively simple wounds, at least well enough that they won't kill you until you can get to a healer. He knows what plants relieve some relatively common ills, and what plants are edible. He knows how to build a fire, a simple shelter, and how to keep himself dry. He knows how to find unoccupied caverns in a pinch.

One of his biggest survival skills- one which doubled as a craft skill- is hunting. J'kol has been hunting since he was old enough to ride a runnerbeast— his father was an avid hunter, and passed the skill onto him. J'kol is skilled with projectile weapons— which is his primary method of hunting— but he's also proficient with traps. He doesn't like using them, except with smaller, faster prey which cannot be brought down with a bow or arrow— he considers it something akin to cheating. He's also skilled with a knife, taught the basic principles of dueling by his father, since his father was under the impression that dueling was one thing every good man should learn. He is very against violence, though; it goes against one of his principles, which is to waste absolutely nothing. Dueling, besides not being allowed between riders, is a tragic waste of life.

Since impressing Lazerith, these hunting expeditions have been much less frequent; more duties in the weyr, and much more dangerous now that they fight thread. There are times, however, when he and the brown go out and rough it in the wild; it's something he finds especially fulfilling. Previously, these excursions were things he did himself, a reaffirmation of his own strength. There's another voice in it now, which is not a bad thing; it's become both a bonding experience, and a way to revel in the strengths of himself, his dragon, and their bond. He especially loves hunting with Lazerith, and will do so in the weyr, too— Lazerith will leave parts of his kills, frequently, for J'kol to take and smoke, tan, or otherwise use in some way. Nothing is wasted.

J'kol is a very strong individual, and in a crisis situation he's not inclined to break down. He is steadfast and will do what he needs to in order to keep things together. This may not be take charge, either— if no one's got a healer and someone's hurt, he'll patch people up. If people need suggestions, he will offer them, if people simply need a calm grounding, he will be the lodestone. He will not frequently step up and actually lead anybody— he has absolutely no aspirations towards that sort of thing. He would rather maintain his independent strength then be a leader, but he will help people in whatever way he can. He is fair, though he will tend towards gentleness; he will deliberately soften his words and actions with sensitive people, even if the situation would be better served by bluntness.

He's very gentle; it's hard to believe that J'kol has a malicious bone in his body. He genuinely likes other people, and likes to see them flourish. He's not THE most social person in the world, and he won't drop everything to cheer someone up, but he does enjoy company, and seeks to bring happiness towards the people he cares about. He's a deeply emotional being, beneath the still waters of his exterior. He also intrinsically respects people, and respects individuality. Where with some people you need to prove your worth and work towards earning their respect, with J'kol you start with having it. It takes some doing to loose his respect, actually.

All is not perfect with J'kol, however.

It takes a LOT to crack this brownrider's patience, but if you really work at it, it will crack and he'll go off the handle. This doesn't manifest in violence against another person, and he won't play dirty and take cheap shots, but he will ream someone else for grossly overstepping their boundaries, for instance, or massive negligence. More often then that, he'll get very frustrated and strew privately. He has enough sense to keep away from people when this happens, and sometimes, if he needs to, he'll go off and let off steam. Lazerith is a great help with this, being his confidant.

J'kol also doesn't trust easily. It's not a judgment on the rest of the pernese population; he's just aware of the fact that people have different skills, and that he can't know anyone else the same way he knows himself and Lazerith. As such, he can't be entirely sure of what other people can do, and what other people need/want. It contributes to some insecurities, about where he stands with relation to other people; he knows where he stands in terms of his place in the weyr's ranks, his abilities, and his relations with the natural world. But people.. people are complicated, and that's where things get fuzzy.

He can be prone to feeling lonely at times, and that will bring up frustration and a sense of unbalance in him, as well.

All of these things bother him, and lead to a sense of unbalance. This unbalance leads to more frustration, which compounds itself. He'll start to feel stagnant, and trapped. None of this is rational, and he recognizes this, which bothers him further— he prides himself on being an incredibly rational person. And that's where things get messy.

It's about this point— where he's feeling uncomfortable and frustrated and unbalanced— that he will take one of those holidays, and go out into the wild and just survive. It's partially a test, and partially a ritual; it shows him that he is strong enough to handle survival, and thus he can handle anything, especially the silly little irrationalities borne of his human brain. It also brings him closer to nature, reaffirms his connection to his dragon and the world, and makes him feel revitalized and good. They can almost be considered a form of self-therapy.

J'kol is also a very confident person. Not arrogant- he doesn't brag— but he does think he can do just about anything, if he really puts his mind to it, and he's stubborn as a mule. When he gets on a track, there really isn't much that's going to dissuade him. This can be a serious issue, both if he finds himself failing or if he attaches himself to some idea that turns out not for the best. The former will leave him heartbroken and seriously questioning his worth and his strength— almost a conflict of identity, for him— and the latter will simply be frustrating to deal with. Either way, not a good situation.

In one of his first threadfalls, J'kol had the bad circumstance of being threadscored on his leg. Lazerith's quick reaction ultimately saved the limb— the thread didn't have a chance to eat down to the bone— but nevertheless it scored him badly enough to leave a permanent mark on the leg. The recovery was long and painful, and the muscle of his left calf never completely recovered; he slightly favors the leg, even now, and it still hurts him occasionally. This is a major issue, to him, because it's a blow to his strength.

He pulled through and still walks, so at once it's a mark of survival and pride— he survived a threadscore, and he still goes on expeditions to the wild despite not being as fit as he once was. It's no impediment to him; he's gotten around it and can handle the pain, and worse. At the same time, however, it's a mark against him, and it wears at him in the back of his mind almost all the time. He's NOT the same as he once was, and it BOTHERS him. Even while he takes pride out of the same injury, the fact that it's affected him as much as it has wears on him. The day he was scored, he realized that he was not invincible, and that's scarred him emotionally as deeply as the thread scored his leg.

J'kol is a great moral thinker, and if he were in contemporary earth, he would pour over the work of philosophers everywhere. As it is, he contends with the harpers and his own internal dialogue. He enjoys speaking with the harpers and people who can have those sorts of deeper conversations. He intrinsically understands the human condition, and at once experiences the angst and exhilaration of life. He loves wit and wisdom, and loves any sort of thing that celebrates it: He's a great fan of anything the harpers do, especially of the theatres and the thinking. He also involves games which involve strategy and thought; he is a great fan of chess. (note: if pern does not have chess, then he is a great fan of whatever game pern has in chess's place.

History

Father was a tanner, mother was a hold-woman. The family lived in the hold his mother had been born in, though J'kol— at the time, Jerrikol— showed great skill in hunting and tanning. Under his father's urging, he was sent to the tannercraft at the age of 10. He progressed very fast, and was set to walk the tables by the time he hit 20. Before he could do the ceremony, however, he was set up to search and brought back to the weyr. Initially unsure and reluctant, the searchrider needed only to mention the word duty and remind him of how much use he'd be in protecting the craft, wilderness, and family he loved, were he to impress and ride against thread. He went through candidacy without anything incredibly special, and impressed Brown Lazerith on the sands of the hatching for which he was searched. They went through weyrlinghood, and graduated without any ill incident. Their second threadfall ended with a threadscore— it got J'kol on the left leg, and scored Lazerith's neck. The brown's fast actions in jumping between saved them, and both were out of commission for awhile— a major blow to their pride. They've both completely recovered, Lazerith with a score-scar, and J'kol with a scar, an occasional limp, and lingering pain in the area.

Dragon

Brown Lazerith
Much like his egg, Lazerith is not the most handsome dragon on the sands. His hide has odd bumps covering some areas of it, and he has extremely sensitive skin that needs to be taken care of with the utmost care. Other than that, he is a fairly typical brown dragon. He is bigger than most browns, and is extremely bulky, unlike the lither bronzes whose size he rivals. On the ground, he can appear quite clumsy with his big wings, but in the sky he is a sight to see.
The ridges of this brown begin as a deep Cinnamon color, lightening in very slight lines as they begin to branch out of the line of his ridges. From there they're eaten by the base of his hide's color: a warm, Cinnamon-orange brown tone that dominates most of his form. his limbs begin to darken at the elbows and hocks, resuming that deeper cinnamon color there and on the tips of his paws and tail. Otherwise, the only break from the warmth is a significantly lighter brown shade, almost a warm cream, which lightens his underbelly and fades as it touches his neck, becoming barely visible. It returns on the underside of his jaw, reaching up the left side of his face to unevenly splash his left cheek and eye.
On the left side of the base of his neck, where his harness rests, there is messy thread-scar; though only half of one. The second half of where the thread would've hit was covered at the time by his rider's leg, and thus the scar ends abruptly.
