Name: Horatio
Nickname:

Position: Wher Candidate /Smith sr. apprentice
Past Ranks: Smith Sr. Apprentice, smith jr apprentice
Craft specialty: Combustion and minerals

Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pan

 • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Well-groomed, Horatio is tall, with light tan skin and dark hair. The hair is kept shoulder-length, and never has a hint of tangles. He has a goatee he keeps neatly trimmed, and pointed at his chin. His eyes are dark brown, his nose a little bit long, and a warm smile.

Personality

You'd never admit this boy to be what he is. A wher handler, and before that, a smith? No, the way he acts, dresses, and generally seems, you'd expect him to be a high ranking holder's son, next in line to inherit the hold.

Vain and slightly arrogant, Horatio has that natural attitude that makes him seem just a cut above your standard person. He's polite and fairly social, and his confidence and opinion of himself carries into how he acts. He stands up strait, he looks like he knows what he's doing— and he usually does, to his credit— and he takes great care of his appearance, even when he's messing with things liable to explode in his face. His clothing is usually high-quality (though admittedly he doesn't have very much of it and takes excessively good care of it).

Chivalrous and charming, Horatio is both convincing and endearing. It's his mouth that gets him out of a lot of the trouble he gets himself into— when he manages to get in trouble at all. He usually plays by the rules, even if that involves.. bending them slightly, if you will. He's very good at finding and exploiting loopholes.

A social creature, Horatio likes company of all kinds. He genuinely enjoys people, and likes getting to know people. He is constantly fascinated by how different people are from himself and from one another. This is a manifestation of his self-centeredness, though that self-centeredness is manifested very strangely; he sees the world from his own perspective entirely, and is aware of the fact that he probably can't see the world as well from anyone else's no matter how hard he tries. This lends him to accept this and act in his own benefit when possible (though not to the detriment of other people, he's quick to note. He's not malicious, and likes to avoid hurting people), but it also means he's fascinated with how other people view the world. He will listen to people for hours and let them explain themselves, because he is intrinsically aware of the fact that he doesn't and can't see the world the same way, and their viewpoint fascinates him.

His friends earn his loyalty fairly quickly, and this strain of loyalty is very strong; Horatio would do almost anything for his friends. This comes from various tasks to protection; there is a deep strain of protection in him. The only violence in him is expressed when it comes to protecting someone he loves, or something too weak to protect itself.

He's not a fan of manipulation, and if people start abusing this loyalty of his, he'll turn on a person very fast. He doesn't handle betrayal of trust well. He also doesn't suffer fools well, though he's more apt to wander away from them then he is to snap; he doesn't want to be maliciously impolite, after all.

While his arrogance in social situation really only has to do with himself— he gives people a chance— it does shine when it comes to his craft. Incredibly confident and fairly proud, Horatio thinks he can do anything when it comes to the smithcraft. Or at least, when it comes to his specialty in the smithcraft, which is combustion and minerals. In other words, he's really good at setting things on fire, and identifying shiny things. And while he DOES know his stuff, he doesn't really like being corrected or told he can't do something, and it's where the arrogance gets that bitter aftertaste that it often acquires. He also automatically assumes he knows more then most when it comes to his field— which may be true, but occasionally it backfires when, for instance, he meets a MASTER who's specialized in his craft field.

He also assumes he knows a lot about things he's not as familiar with, such as other aspects of the smithcraft. For instance, though his work in combustion requires a lot of chemistry, it's a specialized chemistry. He doesn't know the rest very well, but assumes he does. He also isn't very familiar with metallurgy, but he won't admit that.

It was actually through his work with the smithcraft that he became familiar with weyrs— work with minerals frequently brought him down to the mines to see the ores as they were mined and identify strains of gemstones, etc. The whers work in the mines, and there he met them and became enamored by them.

When he becomes interested in something, Horatio does things right; he goes through the loops and finishes what he starts. He makes it his job— that's why he became a member of the smithcraft. And this fascination with whers is going in the same direction; the boy intends to continue work with the smiths, but his focus has shifted to the whers, and all their fascinating nuances.

History

Horatio's mother is a lord holder's nephew, and his mother is a relatively well-to-do harper. Thus, he grew up with a high education and the good manners and some of the lifestyle one would expect in a fairly prosperous, upper-hold. Though he learned well and had the speech skills which would benefit him as a harper. Horatio became interested in fire and minerals early on.

Not one to stand in the way of their son's wants, Horatio's parents urged him to do what he wanted to do, which was go into the crafthall. Upon his 11th birthday, they gave him a firelizard egg and their blessing to become a smith, and he was off shortly thereafter. The firelizard egg hatched into a bronze. He had a fairly normal stay there, though was relocated to the mines when he chose his specialty in senior apprenticehood. He is well on his way to becoming a journeyman, though his focus has shifted to the whers.
