Consise/Basics
Name: Gre'ame
Nickname:
Position: Rider
Past Ranks: Weyrbrat, candidate, weyrling
Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pan
- Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.
Looks
Age has taken it's toll on Gre'ame. He is now much more comfortable on dragonback then he is walking on two legs, and thus, when he is not on Hrokrotath's bath, he has a walking stick with him. His hair is long whenever he can keep it thus, though it's usually tied back in a ponytail for practicality's sake. He also usually has a beard, which he's quite proud of. All of the hair on his head long ago shifted to gray. His eyes are also gray.
Personality
Gre'ame is Gre'ame.
Brave, idealistic, compassionate.. these are words that describe him from some. From others? Foolish. Passionate, which might be a good thing if it wasn't directed at trivialities, far too concerned with other's business. Gre'ame cares deeply for others, and he holds deep to his idealism. People are worth protecting, and he deeply believes that life on Pern can be better, and that people are worth fighting to make things better for.
He is brave and passionate. He will charge into a situation even if it's stupid to do so. This was moreso true, literally, of his youth, but it still stands in his age: so he may not physically run into situations anymore, but he'll still put himself in place to do what he considers good if at all possible, even if that could put him at risk. Arguably, if he had an alignment, it would be Stupid Good, except that you can never be quite sure that his ideals would be called "good." they would certainly be for the lesser man. He is sympathetic, and thus protective, of those weaker then him, and it is in their name that he seeks to better the world. If he absolutely needed to, he would sacrifice himself for his cause.
Make no mistake. Though he can be somewhat humble— in that he will not ignore the present for the past— his humility ends there. He is a very, very proud man. He is sympathetic and protective of those weaker then him out of pity, and he generally pities Pern's youth. He is proud of his accomplishments, he is very proud of his knowledge, and he is most proud of his dragon. That's not to say his expectations of himself are not realistic: he has lived too long to not know his limits, and he can accurately assess them. It's simply to say that he can be arrogant, especially when it comes to concerns of knowledge.
Gre'ame is a very, very smart man. He has always been wise, and age has increased this trait. Further, he has always been a great seeker of knowledge. From his youngest days, he followed the harpers around, begging for more lessons, and that hunger for knowledge did not decrease as he became a weyrling and eventually a full rider. Much of his spare time is spent reading, learning, or traveling to learn more about people and things. He's a very studious man. He has a great history in culture, history, and a slight affinity for Botony- but not as much as his occasional lover, Ra'st.
Gre'ame is also a thinker. Of course, he's a thinker in the traditional book-learning sense— one cannot learn without thinking. However, he is also a philosophical man, and what free time is not spent learning is usually spent pouring over moral issues. He has a strong morality, which generally revolves around his ideologies of helping those weaker then him. He questions everything, and encourages people to do the same, and he also questions his place in life— where he could be most effective. Even much of his social time is spent this way, though more often then not through conversation. Though he won't just stumble up to anyone and strike up a conversation on the deeper philosophies of what it means to be human, if he has a willing participant in such a conversation, he'll relish it more then a finely made meal. He's also quite witty.
Gre'ame is semi-social. He does like the company of people he considers friends, and finds it comforting. He also likes social functions such as parties, though more often then not he'll keep to himself or a small party of friends within the larger party. However, if there is something gnawing on him, he is less inclined to be social: he feels it's irresponsible. He's always the first to be willing to put aside a social call in favor of work that needs doing, and if there is such work to be doing, or somewhere he would serve better to be, that's what he'll do, instead of be social.
Gre'ame is generally friendly, and most who encounter him will say he is so. He is open, and willing to lend a hand where it is needed. He is typically amiable to those who don't mean himself or others outright ill. He likes good conversation, and friendly company. As already stated, he is a compassionate person, especially when it comes to helping his lesser man.
He makes a good teacher, and he is patient with those who are learning or those who stumble by accident. He appreciates individual strengths, and tries to prod people to where they might be most useful.
That said, he does not suffer fools. People who are unwilling to learn or who do not try, he has no patience for. People who are outright malicious, he is hostile to. People who know him are surprised at his bluntness, on occasion. More often then not, it will expose itself in tense situations- but Gre'ame has no qualms about speaking his mind when he thinks it's required, and the results can be quite sharp. Those who know him past his surface admit that he is as quick to anger as he is to laugh- but he is also fairly quick to relax, if there is no actual threat. When he needs to be, he can be both forceful and imposing- he has not forgotten his younger days.
Gre'ame is incredibly honest, and is not likely to mince his words in much of his dealings unless the uncut words would cause unnecessary ill. He is very aware of the consequences of his actions. He values honesty as well. He certainly has a moral agenda, and he likes to reward what he sees as good behavior, displays of good ideals, or good traits in aperson.
Gre'ame is deliberate. Everything he does, he probably does for a reason- even if it may seem otherwise. He is quick to back this up, when people ask, as well. He is also observant, and interested in small things, for they might be useful later. Those that criticize him say he's concerned in things much smaller then himself, things that shouldn't matter to a man of his age, but he shakes off such critics. He is interested in small things, and very watchful. The goings of the weyr are very important to him. Indeed, he is often even interested in gossip. Nevertheless, his curiosity is typically seen as mostly harmless: an old man who indulges his whims as a gossiphound.
Gre'ame is an affectionate man. One might assume him to be reserved, but if you are a friend of his, he has no problem making that clear. He will not touch without permission- however, he is fond of hugs, of small touches, of warm conversation, and general companionship. He keeps his friends close as he might keep family. He is also generous- to people in general, but most often to his friends.
Somewhat suprisingly, Gre'ame is a bit of a pyromaniac. He loves fire. He does smoke [in games which allow smoking of some kind]. He's also very proud of his dragon, and will brag about Hrokrothoth. In fact, he loves combining these two things: he'll often brag about Hrok's skill with flame, and will absolutely not balk at showing this off.
History
Gre'ame's an old man, so we'll keep this brief.
He was born in Southern Weyr, a weyrbrat. His mother was a transfer from the north- a traveling harper, his father was southern-bred. He was very proud of this, especially of his heritage of knowledge, and would seek the harper's attention and stories whenever he could, growing up. He requested to stand when he was young and, after two turns of failing to impress, managed to impress Gray Hrokrothoth when he was 16. Weyrlinghood was uneventful.
His life of a dragonrider had ups and downs: he had many lovers, especially in his youth, and was ambitious. He tried to attain the rank of wingleader for awhile, but fell short- he nevertheless succeeded in making a name for himself as a capable wingrider. He never stopped his search for knowledge.
At the age of 34, he met a rider named Ra'st. They became lovers, and Gre'ame rather expected the relationship to be one of those brief experiences so calm of dragonriders, but it did not end up being so. They are still together now, and they lived as weyrmates together until the age of 71.
Ra'st had no interest in the weyr, and his interest in it waned as he grew older. He wanted to go to the hold and see if he could perhaps arrange some small farm for himself. Gre'ame did not want to leave the weyr, however. Where Ra'st was sick of people, Gre'ame was more interested then ever. Indeed, his attentions had turned for some time to Literair, and it's constant troubles. First it's potentially infertile queen, and then the earthquakes. Something inside him was nagging him him in that direction. His career at southern was winding to a close— and many would say his career as a rider in general was beginning to wane in favor of his age, and he would soon be one of those old riders good for smaller tasks. He had other ideas.
The thought came to him in a dream, and plagued him for a month before he gave in. He would go to Literair. Perhaps he would be another body, or perhaps he would do some good: either way, that's where the activity was. He offered the same to Ra'st, but the other man declined. No. He would seek a place at a hold, perhaps, if they would have him, but he would not follow Gre'ame to a weyr plagued with both problems and youngpeople.
Some might consider that the sign to end a relationship, but it was not: they still visit regularly.
Gre'ame did go to Literair, and has since been there a turn.

Dragon
Hrokrothoth
Gray M Dragon
In build, this is an odd dragon. He seems larger then he actually is, and more ruffled. Deep, strong features give him a brooding, sullen stare, which actually fits him quite well. His limbs seem awkward and longer then they need to be, slightly too-thin enough to look awkward. His joints are bulky, and he looks downright knobbly. That, and his tendency to hold himself close together— wings usually held close, head kept far from what he looks at and arched from his body.
