Name: Gaze
Pronounced: Guyz
Nickname:
Position: Weyrlings
Past Ranks: Traderbrat, Wanderer, Refugee, Runaway, Candidate
Gender: Female
Sexuality*: Pansexual
- Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.
Looks
Though she's thoroughly average height at 5'5", Gaze seems much taller then she is, possibly because of the way she carries herself. Her skin is a naturally creamy tan, which tends to darken upon exposure to the sun. Her eyes are an even grey, and her frame is rounded and imposing. She has long, dark-chocolate-brown hair, which is about to the length of her shoulder blade. In the style of her trading family, she wears baubles and feathers in her hair: she in particular favors red glass beads braided into her hair, and red and brown feathers. She wears the bright red sash of her trading family, despite not knowing who, if any, survived.
Personality
Gaze is fueled by some strange and deep internal fire, which burns mostly with hot embers. Occasionally someone will succeed in getting a rise out of her, bringing out the flame, but for the most part, it simply smolders, lending her a stable and determined force of personality.
Gaze could out-stubborn a mule. She's incredibly willful, and tends to view the world as somewhat antagonistic: it leads her to be naturally rebellious, though rarely for the sake of rebellion alone. She wants the freedom to be what she is and do what she wants, and she absolutely hates it when people restrict what she can do, or what she can say, or make her choices for her in any way. She believes that as a human, she has a fundamental right to go through the human experience on her own terms, and deeply resents anyone who tries to tell her otherwise. She resists authority, when authority isn't making sense to her, and she'll talk back.
What's worse is that she's pretty smart. She'll word her arguments surprisingly well and, though they're laced with sarcasm, they typically tie together a number of abstract and philosophical elements that are out of the realm of most people's every day thinking. These are her every day thinking; analyzing the world around her and what it's emotional and philosophical implications are come as naturally to her as breathing.
Gaze believes that the best way to be a human is to be yourself, whatever the hell that means. She's incredibly independent, and individualistic, and believes that other people should too. She celebrates differences almost militantly, and her favorite question is 'why.' She believes questioning everything is a form of quality control for every day life; if we do not question what we do, how do we know why we do it? If she doesn't approve of something, the first thing she'll ask is why.
Interestingly, Gaze can be swayed by a good argument- that will make her respect people. Her respect is hardwon, but also hardlost: just like her loyalty. For those she considers in her inner circle, she will go to the end of the world and back, and fight the seamonster by hand.
She's very headstrong, so controlling her is not usually an option.. or it takes finesse. If she believes in what she's doing, if she likes the cause she's striving for, she'll go after it as hard as she might resist others: they just have to align with her personal moral set. She's very intense and very passionate. she also has a fiery temper.
Not all is fiery stubbornness with her, though: she can be quite diplomatic, and she enjoys debate as long as it's approached with respect. She's good company in social situations, and enjoys good company and good conversation. She especially enjoys harper's stories, and will let them ramble endlessly if she meets one in a social situation.
History
Gaze was born a few turns before the disaster, to a greenrider in Fort Weyr, and his lower-caverns girlfriend at the time. Her father, the greenrider, had been part of an extended trader family, whose caravan was fairly well-known in the area. Familiar with that lifestyle, he wanted to share it with his children, and convinced Gaze's mother to let her be fostered to the caravan, instead of to the lower caverns.
Thus, Gaze spent her early life primarily with the caravan, which was awesome— until the disasters hit. Being on the road amidst almost-constant earthquakes and then rain was not functional; the caravan had to give up their traveling lifestyle and seek refuge in Fort Weyr, hoping that perhaps the weyr was safe, that it might be immune to the worst of the disasters. They had already lost a significant portion of their numbers to the earthquakes and the flooding.
It wasn't. When Fort fell to the disasters, the family was separated, and Gaze found herself on her own. This period of her life is tumultuous; an endless haze of days spent traveling and jumping from series of caves to campsite, amongst a bunch of strangers who were fellow survivors. She had no idea if her parents had survived, or if any of her caravan had survived either.
Eventually, she and the rest of the flotsam survivors found their ways to the southern holds— the only sort of bastions of civilization she knows to still exist. Life there was considerably more restricting then both the trading caravan and the weyr had been: she had grown up as part of a group of traveling nomads who sold shit and wore bright colors and feathers in their hair, the restrictions of the hold, even the post-disaster hold, were wholly new to her, and they didn't jive well with what she wanted from life.
What's rankling her most of all at the moment are the restrictions on search— she's pointed out time and time again that really, she'd love hte option to be searched, but the powers that be simply don't agree. They need their young people now more then ever, and some point out, they need their female young people.
Gaze has absolutely no intention of being a broodmare, and she's looking for a way to get out: she wants freedom, even if she has to steal it for herself.

Votkath
Flame-gold M Dragon
He (as it would turn out to be) was roughly the size a gold hatchling would be but that was where the similarities ended. This dragonet was built for speed. Large, terribly large wings even for the lanky frame of the dragonet. Everything on the dragon seemed a bit long - a long neck, a long tail, long, wide wings. Yet thin - streamlined down into something long and thin with powerful wings, if he had been a proper color there would have been many gasps of pleasure instead of ones of shock.
…As the Impression settled, his hide suddenly stopped changing colors, flashing into a deep red-orange except for the bottoms of his wings which were a almost silvery gold and on each of his feet to halfway to the elbow joint was a dark bronze-gold fading into medium yellow gold.
((Colors shift continually except when unconscious; Gold and any mix of firecolors together, usually with high percentages of deep orange-red))
