Consise/Basics

Name: Dreja
Nickname:

Position: Weyrling
Past Ranks: Candidate, Refugee, holdbrat

Gender: Female
Sexuality*: Pan

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Dreja is fairly small, at 5'4", and looks smaller then she is because of her tendency to slouch. She's fairly diminutive, thanks to light features and a fast metabolism. Her features are pointed and elegant, and her eyes are a touch too large. These are a bright gray, and brighten her face. Her skin is creamy and pale, and tends to burn when exposed to the sun.

Dreja tends to wear big clothing, because she finds it most comfortable. Her ideal temperature is a bit high— 75-85+— and as such, she frequently wears long sleeves and scarves much longer then her peers. She keeps her black hair long, whenever she's allowed to, and generally has it to her shoulder blades. She's fond of green and black clothing.

Personality

Quirks: Dreja is fairly shy, and has trouble making eye contact.
Fears: Rejection, being alone in dark rooms.

Shy, sweet, nervous, friendly, quiet, slow to trust, affectionate, adoring, warm, skittish, friendly.

Dreja is a skittish person. She's always been skittish, but the death of her father in threadfall exacerbated the problem. It's not a nervousness borne out of any specific fear, though the nervousness is definitely present. Things dropping nearby her, for instance, will make her jump out of her skin. She'll do a doubletake and feel a sharp thrill of fear at those things the mind generates when we glance over things quickly, though that will ease upon investigating it further.

Around people, she's wary and nervous. She is not, however, misanthropic, and she doesn't feel anything against people- there is no deliberate mistrust. She likes people, she really does, and she wants to be close to them. She wishes she was much more social then she is, and that her nerves did not hold her back so often. She takes awhile to trust, and rarely makes eye contact upon meeting people for the first time. She used to stutter badly, and though she's fixed most of that, it does still occasionally creep into her voice. She is like the nervous dog that is slow to trust and very subordinate, that needs some coaxing to come out of it's shell. She is quiet and will only usually offer small tidbits in a public conversation.

She fights with herself over these tendencies. Her resolve can surprise people, when she really gets down to it— it's moments of hesitation that block her, and she realizes this. When something is important enough, she'll charge the hesitation— realizing she's lingering on the edge of the sands, she'll run towards them without giving herself more of a chance to second-guess then she already has, for instance. That's what pushed her to recommend the weyr to her mother.

For all her shyness, she is really quite warm and friendly. She appreciates people and accepts them for who they are— indeed, she loves to marvel at the differences between people, and one of her favorite activities is peoplewatching from afar. She is affectionate and sweet, and when she's close enough to someone to allow touch, she'll be quite physical- mostly platonically, but if someone gets far enough so as to be romantic, she'll jump into that too, with only some reservation. That's how she pushes herself to try things that are making her nervous- she jumps right in.

A lot of her nerves, though mostly inborn, gain strength or come from the fact that she feels a worry that she will never really have an external source of emotional stability. Someone to count on. Upon the Impression of Keith, she found the other end of that spectrum- Keith will never leave her, until death, because he is her dragon. Though she will always be shy and nervous, Keith's stabilizing presence gives her a friend even when everything else in the world has fallen apart. That is enough of a stable base for her to start conquering her problems with reaching out in small ways.

History

Dreja was born in a small hold, nearby the weyr. Her family had long had ties to the dragons, and were proud of that fact, even when the dragons began dropping in size and usefulness. They had once been weyrfolk, and had moved away when the weyrs became more obsolete— but they never forgot their ancestry. Drejas parents used to delight in telling her old stories of dragonriders, some of which were amongst her family members. she recalled there being a large number of gold, bronze and greenriders in these long family histories her family told her about, and that their relative position in the family tree would change on a regular basis with each retelling. The facts are that the number statistics they gave on who rode what was probably wrong, but there certainly were dragonriders in their family— quite a few of them.

Dreja's family was fairly profitable— their cothold was small, beholden to a more central hold, but it made enough to sustain themselves and what they owed to the Lord Holder. They were a proud but happy folk, and hard-working. Primarily they kept to themselves, and found their daughter's chronic skittishness to be something of a disappointment. They had a little electricity, but it was a modest amount- running water, lights, oven… that kind of thing. Not for lack of funding, mind you, but deliberate choice leaning towards the more simpler of life-styles.

They were still affected, however, when thread fell. The house itself was made of stone, in the old way, but greenery was everywhere. Drejas father and brothers had been working in the field, when thread had fallen— they were consumed along with the crops. It was abrupt and horrific— Dreja was left alone with her mother and younger sister.

Dreja's mother kind of.. shut down. Her beloved husband and sons dead, and by an enemy everyne had thought long banished. She laid in bed for a sevenday, while her daughters ate teh stores of food in the house and likewise dealt with their own paralyzing grief. Dreja became more skittish, and her outgoing little sister, Deiyli, stopped speaking entirely.

When food began to run lean, Dreja took action, surprising those who knew of her skittishness. "M-m-mother, we have to g-get out of h-here." she said, voice shaking, to her mother's back. "W-we need t-to go somewhere e-else. T-this place is p-poisonous. It's f-full of me-memories and w-we can't s-support ourselves." When her mother asked where htey would go, she hesitated, remembering the stories. "T-the weyr." she replied, voice steely despite the stutter.

And there they went. Originally refugees, both Dreja and her sister dealt with their trauma slowly. Dreja did not entirely adjust well, socially, though at the urging of Greenrider L'ykos, she stood as a candidate. Drejas mother is still in bad shape— she is a frequent visitor to the mindhealers, and Dreja worries that her mother may attempt suicide.

Dreja was left standing a few times as a candidate— though as often from her violation as anything else. The first hatching, she couldn't bring herself to actually get on teh sands. She'd lingered outside the caverns the entire time, paralyzed by fear. The second time, she'd forced herself on, to be left standing. This had badly shaken her, so she stopped being a candidate for half a turn.. until L'ykos heard about it and sought her out, urging her not to give up. So once again she tried, at a green's hatching. At the hum, she had lingered outside the sands— could she push herself onto it? For a fleeting moment, she'd considered running the other way— and she had run. She'd run strait to the sands, late as she was, knowing that if she gave herself a second to second-guess herself, she wouldn't join the group on the sands at all.

Imagine her surprise when her late entrance was met with a bugle of joy— a brown had been pacing the girls, looking for something— looking for her. Her keith.
