Consise/Basics

Name: Devari
Nickname: Vari

Position: Candidate
Past Ranks: Weyrbrat

Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pan

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Devari takes after his parents in a lot of ways. He is short, and probably will be even once he's reached his full height. At present he is 5'3", and probably has two more inches to gain. His skin is a pale ruddy tone, as if he's covered in a fine layer of dust. His hair is naturally thick and wavy, and hangs to his shoulders. Both of his parents have red hair, so it stands to reason that he does too: it's a deep auburn shade, almost brown, but in the sunlight it's red gleams. His eyes are large and round, and a deep, liquid brown tone. The features of his face are soft and gentle, except his nose, which seems just a little long.

Personality

In terms of personality, Devari seems to take after his mother more then his father.

While his father wasn't one of those arrogant bronzers, and was actually quite sweet and friendly, he was still every inch a natural leader: Devari just doesn't seem to have those skills. If he does, they're well hidden under a thick layer of shyness— he takes awhile to get comfortable with people and with situations. He's not very ambitious, a trait his father's dragon specifically didn't like— he doesn't really want to follow in his father's footsteps, necessarily.

He's non-aggressive and non-assertive— he's not spineless, but he's not going to throw his weight around to get what he wants. He'd rather ask nicely and use diplomacy. IF he's in a situation where he's getting bullied, rather then addressing it head on, he'll either try to leave or try to fix it through indirect means.

He's pretty friendly, and a bit of a daydreamer. Once you get past his shy, slightly nervous exterior, he's great company and a loyal friend. Like his mother, he's very affectionate, especially physically so, but he's much more reserved about showing it. He has to already be very comfortable with someone to pull out the affection.

He's a touch of a hopeful idealist, and though he's non-assertive, he'll be brave when he needs to be— when it really counts. He's also pretty smart, and can safely rely on his wits where others can rely on their brawn.

Devari is very concerned that he's not going to live up to people's expectation- he wants to make the people around him happy, even if he doesn't know them, and he certainly doesn't want to let anyone down. It can lead to him worrying endlessly over little things, to his detriment- he sometimes needs someone to tell him to calm down and focus on what really matters, or to focus on himself for a change. A good degree of his nervousness is the fact that he grew up in his father's shadow, and people expect him to Impress bronze and lead a wing. That's all well and good, but at this point he just wants to Impress at all, regardless of color or what he eventually ends up doing.

Dreamer, hopeful, idealist, friendly, worried, shy, nervous, non-assertive, brave when he needs to be.

History

Devari was born to greenrider Devi of Andiacuth and her longtime Weyrmate, their first son. They did not live in Telgar: rather, he was born in High Reaches Weyr, where they lived, and where he was raised.
Though raised in the lower caverns by a wetnurse, Devari grew up in his father's shadow. His father was a wingleader and had been shortly after he and his bronze graduated weyrlinghood, and the pair spent a brief stint as weyrseconds. They were fair but occasionally frigid leaders: they had as many supporters as they did enemies, and all of those people had the same expectations for Devari as they had for his father. Some treated him with the assumption that he could be unfriendly and unpleasant, and others seemed to assume he would do great things and, indeed, wonder why he hadn't already. This was slightly alleviated by his mother; Devi took a regular interest in Devari, and played a willing ear whenever he had troubles.
When he turned 14, Devari stood at a hatching at High REaches weyr, and everyone assumed he would do well- that he would impress a bronze like his father, and achieve great things. When he was left standing, it sprung up whispers, but for the most part, people said 'better luck next time.'
So he stood again, and was yet again. The whispers were louder, and he was almost unwilling to try standing a third time. Once again, left standing.
Repeatedly being passed up for a dragonet were blows to his pride; he had envisioned and worked for no other future for himself then being a dragonrider. He had been upset and rankled that everyone assumed him to be what his father was, and frequently worried that he wouldn't live up to their expectations— but even the basest of those expectations involved him having a dragon of some kind!
He took several months off of his candidacy, hesitant and unwilling to try again. The last time he'd been left standing was shortly after his 15th turnday; almost an entire year passed, and another clutch on High REaches' sands that he did not stand for.
His mother urged him not to give up, but he was unwilling to face the eggs at High REaches again- to be left standing again, and face the whispers and judgment of everyone who had expected so much from him, again.
Devi suggested an alternative: a clutch had just hatched at Telgar, and their queen was due to rise soon; there would be a clutch there. He was a stranger at Telgar, he could stand for their clutch as their candidate. The dragon was not out of his future just yet.
Devari spent some time deliberating this, but in the end accepted— maybe, hopefully the thing standing in his way was not anything present in himself that turned the dragons away. Maybe he just wasn't at the right location to Impress the dragon destined for him- Maybe his dragon was at Telgar.
