Consise/Basics

Name: Boa'r
Nickname:
Pre-impression name: Border

Position: Weyrling
Past Ranks: Holdless, Guard cadet, holdbrat, Candidate

Gender: Male
Sexuality*: Pansexual

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Eye color: Gray
Hair color: Brown
Height: 6'3"

Border is a tall man: 6'3". He's covered in the obvious sort of muscle which comes of a lifetime of disciplined combat training, which he continued even after he left the guard. His hair is kept shorn short, and it's color is the same brown as fresh mud. He would wear it longer, but practicality and habit leftover from the guard dictate otherwise. His eyes are lucid grey, and warm the sharp, square lines of his face, which would otherwise be imposing. His nose is a bit long for his face, but he has a wide, warm smile. He usually wears a goatee, though occasionally he'll shave completely. Border tends to wear clothing of grey and beige, and has his knife on his person whenever he can manage.

Personality

Likes: Dragons, Whers, Newhalfs, Flitters, and Cats.
Dislikes: Being given orders which contradict his morals, overly sweet foods, tunnelsnakes, webcrawlers, and insect bites.
Goals: Repent for his part in the dragon genocides, help the dragons to recover their numbers pre-genocide.
Fears: The dragonriders will find out his past and ostracize him, the dragons will be wiped out.
Habbits and quirks: Bites nails, hates being unarmed, carries a knife always which he'll compulsively polish if he feels uncomfortable.

Border is every inch the strong warrior he's been trained to be. The guard is in his blood: his father, and his father's father, and so on. He was trained since birth to assume the mantle of the guard, and he went into it at a young age, even if he ended up defecting shortly therefter. He also benefited from the unique perspective his wherhandling mother brought to the mix: a personal affinity for dragonkin most of the guard lacked.

Strong and disciplined, Border has both strength of body and of mind on his side. He's hard to dissuade, when he wants to do something: He's 6'3" of muscle and hardened resolve. That said, he's very much in control of himself: there's nothing about him that suggests he might fly off the handle. He's usually very relaxed.

There's an odd serenity about him- a calm seriousness that comes partially from training, partially from confidence and the knowledge of exactly what he's capable of, and partially from inborn traits. He finds zen in exercise, and meditates unintentionally on a regular basis. When he's alone, he'll zone into his thoughts— he especially likes to do this while taking walks away from civilization, where he can "bring his mind together."

He likes people, but he finds that the loud presence of daily weyr life does grate on him after awhile. He needs his quiet and his serene moments to recoup, or else he gets headaches and gets rather snappish. Too much people overwhelm him.

This is because, surprisingly, he's a deeply empathetic soul. Border is a compassionate soul, and though he was trained in the guard, he'd rather things be solved with civility and words. Violence is a last resort sort of thing. He's perfectly capable of acts of violence— his guard training does include combat— but he chooses not to exercise it. He doesn't see very much how or why people might do otherwise- things are so much less messy when you don't resort to hacking things' heads off. Fewer people lost as collateral damage.

That said, he's incredibly social. He adores people- perhaps why he's so compassionate to them. Other people fascinate him- he likes having conversations and figuring out how people tick. So long as he can have his personal time, he's quite friendly and approachable, and makes good conversation. He seems attracted to hurt souls— his stability and his good-will make him a natural healer sort of person. He can be a protector, a comfort, a shoulder to cry on.. Always platonicaly, but can and will be there for his friends if they need him.

His loyalty runs deep: his people come first. Family has grown more important to him then any other source of loyalty, though he will grow loyal to a place with the right incentives. For his family, he will do next to anything. He is courageous and strong: he'll face down demons for his friends, or just provide the emotional support.

Border is clever, with an almost intuitive knowledge of the world. He learns quickly, especially when it comes to things he can do with his hands. He's never been the fastest at arithmetic, but combat and hunting were both things he picked up very quickly. He's also very good at finding ways around a situation, especially physically. Road's blocked? That's okay, he can figure out a way to clear it, and if not, he can figure out an alternate route. He's very good with directions, and has a long memory.

Border can be tenacious and stubborn. He's strong-minded, and has deeply held opinions and beliefs. He won't go shoving them around onto other people, but they're there nonetheless, and trying to force him to go against them will only end badly. He's a moral being, with a strain of idealism- he believes in the greater good of humanity, and that people mean well, even if they don't always do well. This is why he seeks to nonviolent methods of problem resolution: life and health should be preserved. He's tenacious, too— if he needs or wants to do something, it will be done, especially if it could be a benefit to one of his people.

Border is an incredibly patient person, most times. If he has a lot of pent up energy or hasn't been able to net some time to himself, he'll be snappish— otherwise, he has a high tolerance for other people, especially if they're lashing out because they're in pain. He's a hard-worker and he's dedicated, and his patience allows him to chip away at problems little by little until they cave away.

Border is incredibly energetic. The man is a trained guard and has been working out as long as he can remember- he likes to start the day with a run, and if he can't get some good energy-pushin' exercise, he gets antsy and irritable. Indeed, he tends to shred things with his hands if he hasn't had his exercise, and thus it's best to let him run, so as to prevent him from being destructive. He gets that way when he's nervous, too— that puts him off his natural balance, and for a creature so used to an inborn zen serenity, that's an uncomfortable thing.

Being so deeply moral, Border will question orders if they cross his morality line. He is prone to guilt if his morals are crossed, and that guilt will be hard resolved—- even for fairly little things.

The dragon genocides were certainly NOT a little thing, and the guilt from that weighs heavily on his soul. He did it because he'd been ordered to, and at the young age, so freshly inducted to the guard, he wanted to make his superiors and, by extension, his father happy. Still, he balked internally at the orders, and when his small group of trainees did participate in the genocide, he felt nothing but remorse— the looks in the faces of the riders, and the noises the dragons made as their riders were killed. They still haunt Border to this day, and make him brood. He'll often loose himself in thought with a disturbed look on his face, and it's these events he's reliving.

History

Border was raised in a unique family- his father was a guard, and the bloodline of guard had long been formal in the family. He married a wherhandler, however— an odd choice, but they had been brought together by chance: Border's mother was the handler of the local hold's night guard wher.

As such, Border was raised without the contempt for dragonkin many of his peers possessed. He was mocked relentlessly as a child, and thus worked twice as hard to prove his worth. He entered the guard as his father had, at the age of 13.

He hadn't been one very long when the dragon genocides took place. The guard was one of the first mobilized to attack the dragons, and as a trainee, he helped. He helped to kill a group of weyrlings— he killed their beasts, leaving them broken.

He'd had misgivings about it before, but upon killing the weyrling dragons— even under orders— he couldn't take it. The looks on their riders' faces were too real, they haunted him too clearly. Thus, he left the guard without warning- simply defected, and became a nameless, holdless wanderer.

Border is not his birth name— it's a name he assumed at this point, having renounced the name of his birth as tarnished by his crimes.

A year or so of bouncing between the holds, and he heard a welcome piece of news: not all the dragons had been killed. There was a weyr.. somewhere. The dragons weren't all dead! He's been looking for the weyr since, hoping perhaps to repent for his misdeeds.

((I want to bring him in as having just found the weyr))
