Name: Bone Gnawer
Nickname: Boney
Pre-exile Name: Stormwatcher

Position: Wanderer
Past Ranks: Traderbrat, The Family Trader Apprentice, Exile
Special: HAW

Gender: Female
Sexuality*: Pansexual

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Survivalist and wildwoman, Bone Gnawer looks like what she is. Though naturally a pale tan, her skin is usually sun-darkened, but for the scars- both of accident and of familial ritual- that stand out bright white on her arms. She looks older then she is, thanks to her outdoorsy lifestyle— very weatherbeaten. Her hair is long, and a sort of sandy blond-brown. It goes down to her hips, and it's thick, but it does not fall strait- it's a mixture of dreadlocks and braids, with the occasional deliberately-placed decoration in it. She wears a bandanna over the top of her head, to keep it down and out of her blue-grey eyes. Her body is muscular, and curvy, and she looks like she could take people in a fight. She likes brightly colored clothing, having come by it honestly from her trader heritage, but also values practicality, so she wears pants instead of skirts.

Personality

Before Bone Gnawer was known as Bone Gnawer, her title was Stormwatcher.

She came by that name honestly. When she talks about her skills, it's not her ability to survive in the wilderness that she names as the most important, but her ability to watch things. She also listens, with a special emphasis whenever she speaks the word. By that she means that she doesn't just hear what people are saying, but the tone in which they say it. She observes the world through her senses, and notes what's different. Her mind is incredibly good at picking out patterns and the breaks in patterns, and though she doesn't have much in the way of formal education, her intelligence and cleverness see her through.

That's one thing that's important to mention. Bone Gnawer hasn't had much formal education. She can't really do math all that well, and basic principles that most people learn as a child she was never exposed to. Her book smarts are pretty lacking. This is because the Family never thought it worthwhile to teach such things to their children: the history of their clan, their ways, and the way they survived was more important. Indeed, when she left the Family, Bone Gnawer was illiterate. She is literate now, just barely, but she still speaks improperly most of the time. Even if Bone Gnawer were to try to learn something the standard way- through studying and books— she wouldn't succeed. She doesn't have the patience to sit over musty hides and glare at them until they divulge their secrets.

Where her academic intelligence is lacking, her wisdom is not. It's almost intuitive, how she goes through the world and interacts with things. It helps also that she's calm, and kind of serene in the same way an approaching storm is serene. An odd calm, with energy and strength behind it. Bone gnawer is always on alert, looking out for the next trouble on the horizon- or the next friend in need of some company. She can keep her head in a crisis, which is good, considering how often she's on her own.

Bone Gnawer is a very skilled person, but her skill set is very specific. She works well with animals. She's both intuitive for living things and empathetic, which helps in dealing with animals— though that talent extends to humans to, she strait up admits that she prefers dealing with animals in that way. They're less complicated and more friendly, according to her. Bone Gnawer is also good in terms of survival skills. Hunting, gathering, making things, emergency wilderness first-aid. All of these things she's damn good at, which is excellent considering that she leads a nomadic lifestyle and lives on her own. This takes a toll on her body- she looks older then she is already, and she's unlikely to reach the old age of some aunties and uncles in the holds. Nevertheless, it's what she loves- in her own words, it's the only thing that makes her feel comfortable. Bone Gnawer maintains her little pack of beasts as she wanders from place to place. She's especially proud of her riding wherry, and hopes to get a few more, and perhaps start breeding them. That is a dream for the future, though, as she readily admits it would mean staying in one place longer then she'd ordinarily like.

That is one thing that defines Bone Gnawer. Wanderlust. She's a nomadic person, and she doesn't like to stay in one place long. She has places that she stays in most of the places she goes: the weyr, the seahold, many of the halls, perhaps one of the other holds on an infrequent basis. Staying in one place makes her feel exposed, restless. She can't help it- it is literally in her blood.

Speaking of her blood: naturally, she has a bad relationship with the Talenta Family. She is not like them— she never was. They practice a strong sense of separation from the rest of the world and themselves: the only real interaction they have with the rest of the world is to trade, and they like it that way. They believe themselves superior, and that was the first place where Bone Gnawer butted heads with them. She is a curious woman, and her curiosity is about living things— including people. Especially people. She wanted to know about people who weren't part of the Family, wanted to meet them and talk to them. She didn't (and doesn't) think that she was superior. It eventually led to her exile.

And that is an important thing to say. Bone Gnawer doesn't pay much attention to rank. As she sees it, all people are equals, and all people are different. So she doesn't command a hold- most lord holders couldn't survive her lifestyle for more then a few days. Rank is relative. She is outside it. She's going to respect people for who they are and what they can do- not what their paperwork says they are.

Bone Gnawer is perhaps one of the most accepting people you can meet. Unless you cross her or threaten her directly, she's going to probably be okay with you. She takes people at face value, and she's always willing to give them a chance. There's a place by her side for you, if you want to be there. She likes company, if only for brief periods of time (she is a nomad, and most people aren't), and she doesn't care what your past holds and whatnot. What's important to her is that you're here now, and you're who you are now. If who you are now wants to hurt her or her people, then she has a problem with you— if not, then who cares. It's a quiet acceptance, too. You can stumble into one of her campsites, and she'll look at you, nod, and offer you some food. She won't ask people a bunch of questions, make them identify and explain themselves. IF they WANT to unload, she will hear it, and if they want advice, she will give it- otherwise, it's the here and now. She asks little of people- the only thing she wants is respect and her own freedom.

She is also a moral person, for her own sense of morals. Most of her morality comes from the way of the wild, but she isn't a Darwinist, social or otherwise. She can be quite protective, and if she sees the weak getting trampled on, she will see it as her duty to interfere. All other issues, however, she won't. Similarly, her view of legality and law is fairly abstract: these are things the citybound people deal with, not her. IF someone asks her to assess a situation, she's going to go more with a humanist/for-the-good-of-all perspective then one that follows the letter of the law, and she fully believes that breaking the law is the right thing to do if the law is hurting people. The intricacies of law and politics drive her insane, and she doesn't understand them, which is more reason why she's happy enough to be a nomad.

When Bone Gnawer moves, it's with a slow deliberation. She doesn't rush. She doesn't need to- it's unwise and a waste of energy. She also moves with a natural sort of casual strength. She's not very graceful, but it's clear by looking at her that she's strong. The flesh on her bones is muscle.

Bone-gnawer is mostly friendly. Quiet, which might put some people off, but mostly friendly. She considers her words before she says them, but she's usually willing to listen to anyone else's words. She's warm, too— and that translates even before you really start talking to her. She holds herself with a sort of warm, gentle confidence. She's got this internal serenity that's obvious. It's also obvious that she Doesn't Belong, when she's in holds or weyrs- but also that she's an interested visitor, who will soon leave.

Having left the Family has done good things for her. In addition to learning how to read, however badly, she is now more world-wise then any of them have been. Certain elements of pop culture make more sense to her, and even though she doesn't live in the close-together atmosphere of the weyr or the holds, and can't concieve of how anyone else could, she understands people and their society a little better, and can navigate it better because of that. She's also open to more progressive ideas, such as those occasionally spouted by the harper hall, which she whole-heartedly embraces. Note that she doesn't embrace every idea with open arms- just hte ones that resonate with her, but she'd never even have heard those ideas if she hadn't left the family and started Listening.

What passes for cities on Pern make little sense to Bone Gnawer, but nature is something she understands. She loves it, has sort of a connection with it- a deep kind of bond. It's where she's most comfortable. IT reminds her of her roots, keeps her humble. She doesn't get the false-head of living in the weyr or the holds, as she likes to say.

Bone Gnawer is a bit of a dreamer, and enjoys her flights of fancy when she can get them. While she does occasionally let her head float up to the cloud, she keeps herself grounded enough to know what's going on around her: it would suck to be snuck up on by a wild wher because you were too busy daydreaming. Even more then a dreamer, Bone Gnawer is an amateur philosopher, which is part of the reason she enjoys going to the holds and the halls so much: there are people to talk to, to debate with. Such concepts as ethics, and what it means to be human. Those things speak to her, and she spends plenty of time pondering them with only the company of her beasts.

She does, as stated, enjoy a good conversation. She's not asocial, and though she wants for very little, part of the reason she goes around to populated areas is to maintain contact with her own kind. Sort of like mental health trips. Nature keeps her real and she loves it, this is true, but it might also lead to an improper severance with her own kind. She knows she is human, and that she needs to be around other humans sometimes- she craves the contact. So, she goes to the cities and sees people. Since she's not a misanthrope, it's not a chore: it's something she enjoys, even if she doesn't stay long so that the lifestyle of the place becomes overwhelming.

Bone Gnawer has a set of people who she is close to, and she stays close to them, even when she's far away. Her friends matter to her, and she wants to maintain contact. This, she has trained some of her firelizard army to carry messages, and though she finds it much more convenient to send empathetic messages, she can and will scrawl down a few thoughts on some hide and send it to someone if she needs to. She is a very loyal person, and since her own family has renounced her, she makes a new family out of friends.

Bone Gnawer is a spiritual person, but what that means to her is something people are unlikely to find out. She;s a very casual person, and she won;t stop being casual even if the situation would prefer a more formal event: she's a peripheral on this bigger society, and sees no point in pretending to be what she's not. She is practical, and exceedingly fair- which doesn't always mean nice. She is a very generous person- if she has it, and you're friendly, she's willing to share it. She does indulge in smoke and drink and other forms of recreational chemicals from time to time, but rarely to excess.

The comfort and health of Bone Gnawer's little tribe is very important to her, and for that reason she goes to great length to ensure their comfort. For instance, they mostly travel at night, to make things easier on Bonegnask and her photosensitive eyes. For when that is an impossibility, and they must move when it is hot or light outside, she had a specially-designed light-hood constructed for her wher, so that Bonegnask's eyes need never burn.

History

Bone Gnawer wasn't born with the name Bone Gnawer.

She comes from a very small trading family who functions more like a small tribe then a trading family. while they go from place to place exchanging goods, they are NOT one of the main families, and they tend to specialize in higher quality and less sought after goods. Oh, they'll have your standard array of goods available… but most of what they've got is going to be high-quality handcrafted goods. A lot of the goods are produced by the Family itself.. textiles, skins, etc.

That family is incredibly… closed to outsiders. They do what they do. They don't want people interfering. They think themselves better, and the only interest they really have in the stationary people of hold and hall and weyr is as far as trading; otherwise they want nothing to do with them. They have a very strict internal hierarchy and a very strict lifestyle, and they are typically a serious people. They have two names- one family name, and another name that's more of a title. When one of their number leaves the tribe, it usually isn't on good terms, and they usually take the member's names and titles upon leaving, because that person wasn't worthy to wield one of the Family's honorable names. The name isnt shared with anyone but the family, the title is how they were known to outsiders.

Bone Gnawer won't say her name from before. Her title from before was Storm Watcher. She earned it as a child- she was always a dreamy sort, interested in the world around her, and storms would fascinate her. PErhaps it was that mindset that ended up earning her a world of trouble within the Family.

She wasn't like them, not from the beginning. She was interested in things outside of the family. She wanted to talk to the holders they traded with, not simply do business and leave. She used to be quite the babbler, and curious in ways that made the Elders uncomfortable. She didn't subscribe to the belief that the family was automatically superior and thus shouldn't have dealings with the ordinary uncouth folk. She thought they were equal, but different, both equally valid. None of those were very popular ideas. The Elders hoped she would get better with age. She didn't.

What she did do was get better in skill. She excelled in tracking and wilderness survival, and she dealt with the animals that made the Family's livelihood possible really well. Those skills were as if a calling to her. The only reason they let her stay in the tribe as long as they did was because of her excellent skills.

She also managed to make some political enemies within the Family, as she aged. It was pretty clear things weren't going so well for her, even from as young as 15, and that she was probably facing exile. She considered leaving several times, but ended up lingering much longer then she'd intended to, inadvertently becoming kind of the omega of the family. They didn't take her name from her until she was exiled, but they did take her title away a year before she left, replacing it with the scornful name "Bone gnawer", since she ate last and got the scraps of the meals.

At 17, she announced her intention to leav,e having grown frustrating enough. REally, she was just beating to them to the punch with exile. They took her name, and cast her out. Bone Gnawer wasn't really a title, so they didn't take that, and she kept it, for reasons that are her own.

She likes the name.

Since then, she's lived on her own. She still trades, but mostly in order to get what she cannot provide for herself living in the wilderness. Otherwise she travels around, making frequent appearances at the weyr, and at some of the holds. She typically stays at each place for a short period of time, but she doens't linger for long; she is a wanderer. it wouldn't suit her to set up permanent camp.

she's kind of created a replacement tribe of animals, since it's hard to live on your own for long periods of time without help.
