- Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Looks
Tall and gangly, Alkali could be called elegant, but for a look of distracted haphazardness that follows him and expresses itself on his face and in his movements. Wide, mercury-colored eyes stare out of a face with high cheek bones features and a long smile. Fine, curly hair spills from his head, coming to about his shoulders. It's a creamy blonde shade, matching the paleness of the rest of him.
Personality
There's no getting around it: Alkali is weird.
On earth, he'd be a nerd. He eats up knowledge that's relevant to his interest like it's food; he'll forgo food if he gets really into an experiment, and say nothing about sleep. Sleep is for the weak— and he is a touch of an insomniac. When he's learning something new, he gets very excited: downright jittery, sometimes.
His focus is touchy; for something he's into, it's sharp and pointed: he can do the same repetitive motion for hours, if it means some successful science! But conversation and social graces have never been much of a priority to him; he'll do them if he needs to, of course, and he does like being a little bit social- but he has trouble paying attention to conversations, and it might seem you're constantly yanking him back to the here and now.
Despite that, he's quite friendly, if very.. high energy? He seems to always be slightly manic; he's very enthusiastic about everything he does, and if he gets excited, he starts speaking very quickly, making him occasionally hard to understand. He gestures wildly, and grins most of the time; it makes him look just a tad crazy if he really gets going on what happens if you mix powder A and powder B.
He's a touch nervous, and also very imaginative: it's a strange combination. He'll let his mind run away with him; for instance, if he's walking through a dark storage cavern alone, his mind will start making monsters out of the shadows, and his imagination will run with it. He'll rush through whatever he was doing and literally run out of there, only to calm and laugh at himself a bit when he's emerged into the daylight. He's rational the whole time- it can't be a monster, there is no monster there- but it's the irrational part of his imagination that inspires him in that situation.
That same imagination makes him a great smith. His curiosity is endless. He terrorized his parents and masters with constantly asking 'why, why, why?.' He's also very creative, and slightly abstract: it makes him approach problems in strange ways, suggesting things that seem rather out there, but are usually very effective.
Despite all of that, and his occasionally lacking social graces, he's actually very friendly- he likes people and he likes company, even if people don't always know how to handle his brand of strange. He'll answer any questions you have- possibly too technically for you to understand, if it's about something he knows.
Alkali is also very haphazard; he's usually so focused on what's going on in his head, that he's not always paying attention to what's goingon around him. He'll occasionally walk into a door he didn't realize was closed, or stub his toe. His clothing is always disheveled, and seeing him in two different shoes is not unusual. He's even been known to put clothing away in the kitchens, but that particular instance involved drink…
What kind of Science! does Alkali like to do? His specialty within the smith craft is chemistry (though pern may not call it that?), and he is a guy. He likes drinking, sex, and explosions, and he's managed to make two of those his job. Sort of. Booze can be kind of counted as an aspect of chemistry (he knows how to distill, anyway…) While a lot of his work as a smith journeyman does include things like making stuff for the flamethrowers and figuring out how to make metalworking and other chemical aspects of pern more efficient, he also spends a large amount of time on things we might call pyrotechnics: making things explode, for instance, or even better- making things explode in more colorful ways.
History
Alkali's history isn't very unusual, for a smith: he was born into the craft, and always had a talent for math and chemistry, in his earlier lessons. He continued to show that eagerness and talent, and made his parents proud when he assumed apprenticeship at the age of 10.
He excelled, especially in areas of chemistry, and chose his specialty early, working towards it with all the fervor he approaches anything he adores. He walked the tables at 18, though by that point he had already been working towards his specialty for a few turns, and in his spare time, making him explode.
He was settling into his journeymanhood and had been doing so for a year when a searchdragon came to the hold, searching for a recent clutch at Bayou Weyr. This searchrider caught sight of Alkali as he was bustling through the courtyard after something- he hadn't come out when the search was called, because he figured he was too old. The searchrider seized on him, and convinced him with a selection of candidates several years younger then him to come along. He was a relative latecomer to the weyr, but he's thrown himself at candidacy with the same enthusiasm he did with chemistry. His only wish is that there were more chances to blow shit up.

Brown M Dragon
The brown, an excellent example of one, sizes in fully at around thirty-four feet in length. He is a large brown in every sense of the word. He is wide, some even would dare to call him, ah, overweight. Well, it certainly doesn't matter if the brown is overweight, because he is goddamned beautiful. His head and upper half of his torso is a milky chocolate color, and the bottom half including his tail looks like sweet caramel. His wings, though, are the kickers. Large and thickobviously to keep him up in flight, because anything less than that and he'd drop like a stonethey showcase a marvelous gradient between a deep soil color to a light, almost bronze-looking hue at the edge of the wingtips. He may have girth to him, but this brown is splendid to look at. Now, just because he is heavy doesn't mean he is without muscle, he is packed full, and shards, muscle or not he would be something to stand up to.
