Consise/Basics

Name: Akanni
Nickname:

Position: Brownhandler
Past Ranks: Wher-candidate

Gender: Female
Sexuality*: Pan, leans towards het

  • Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.

Looks

Akanni's on the tall end of the average scale, for men: he's about 6'1", and he never lost the lankiness of his teenage years. His tan is permanent: he gets little sun exposure, so it's creamy brown-bronze tone is his base skin tone. His hair is long and black, and he frequently wears it back in a ponytail to keep it from getting in the way of things. His eyes are a pleasant green, and his long features are friendly enough when he smiles: which is frequently. He keeps himself fastidiously clean-shaven, and as neat as circumstances will allow.

Personality

Akanni is pretty easy to get along with. Easy-going and friendly, he's good at soothing egos and making people feel welcome. He's a very patient person, with children and adults alike— though his patience is notably longer with young kids, because he likes them.

He's also a very loyal person, with a deep sense of ties to his family and his home. He'll do almost anything for them, if he judges the need great enough and the outcome worth it. He's responsible and can be trusted with secrets and sensitive jobs, and has a deep sense of duty and honor. He does have a tendency to fret and worry, especially if things are undecided or out of his hands.

As strong as his love for his home is, Akanni is also something of a wanderer: he will leave for weeks or months at a time. It used to be more private wanderings: he'd go off for days or even weeks while he was learning to survive on his own, testing his mettle against nature. Since bonding Akansk, this has transformed to month-long wanderings: he frequently goes out with travelers and trading caravans, providing them nightly protection in exchange for company and a route. He always comes home, though, and relishes being at the wherhall whenever he's there. He can't imagine leaving it permanently.

Akanni has dreams; he imagines days where he has a family of his own, or some kind of official responsibility for the wherhall. These he thinks of as far off prospects— after he's done with all this wandering, which won't be for a few turns yet, at this rate. Still, he likes to think of these things when he's alone, and remains hopeful that they'll happen. Before those also come his responsibilities, however, which at this point seem mostly to be worrying about the future of the whers.

Easy-going, friendly, patient, responsible, worried, insomniac, Loyal, duty-oriented, wanderlust, deep fondness for home, worriwort

History

Whers may not be that common, but they're all Akanni knows: he was born into a family of wherhandlers. His line has been at the wherhall for generations, and just like many dragonriders with long lines of dragonriders in their family trees, the handling of a wher was the assumed job for any of his blood.
Akanni took to it with a liking. He was around whers from the moment he was born, and grew up with no fear of them. He was helping out with his mother's green and his father's bronze from the point he could walk. He was a natural choice for wher-candidacy, though he put it off, slightly.
He began learning the basics of wherhandling formally at the standard apprenticeship age of 10, and actually stood to get a wher for the first time at the age of 14. He was not successful- the gold judged that there were no eggs for him. This happened two times more, and he decided to stop trying— at least for a little while. He never intended the lull in his attempts at a wher to be permanent; he had a deeper feeling that now simply wasn't the right time, and either the golds agreed or they picked up on his mental sentiment.
He spent six years doing generally odd-jobs. He honed survival skills, spending thread-free weeks in the woods for days at a time, learning how to hunt and live on his own. He dabbled in tanning, and earned his keep in the wherhall by cooking and doing other odd jobs, same as the other wher candidates. He never formally stopped being a wher-candidate— just took a bit of a break for it.
When he turned 20, he decided to try again. Something felt different and he wasn't sure what it was— and this time, he was successful. He came away with a decently-sized egg, which hatched into Akansk. At the time of his hatching, Akansk was actually amongst the smaller browns of his clutch, but he grew rapidly.
Akanni and Akansk didn't stay at the wherhall all the time: they'd frequently go out to travel with caravans, providing nightly protection for a chance to see Pern. They avoided stays at holds— holders had bad ideas of what a wher was, and Akanni didn't like the way they looked at Akansk. They did return home frequently, and spend long-months at the wherhall.
The state of the wherhall has long been a concern for Akanni: the whers have always been somewhat low in numbers, but it seems to be more pronounced then ever. To add to his worries, he left the wherhall most recently a few sevendays before a last clutch was laid, complete with a gold egg. The clutchmother was an old, old creature, and she went between shortly after laying this last clutch, leaving them dangerously low on breeding females. This adds a palpable worry to Akanni's mind. He feels it's his duty to help this situation somehow— he just doesn't know how.

Akansk
Brown M Wher
On the large end of the scale for browns, Akansk is well-built: his thick musculature covers his large frame. He is certainly an imposing figure, despite the fact that he wouldn't hurt a soul. His features are slightly longer then one would expect- long eye-ridges, a long muzzle, and long legs- which may contribute to his size. A rich, auburn-brown covers most of his back, darkening on his underbelly and on the edges of his legs, and the tip of his muzzle. This pleasant gradient is broken by markings of a lighter shade, creeping up the side of his face, and appearing in jagged bars down his four legs- lines of lighter, creamy auburn breaking across the darkness of the deeper tone.
