Consise/Basics
Name: Aesta
Nickname:
Position: Weyrwoman; goldrider
Past Ranks: Harper craftbrat, Harper apprentice, harper journeywoman, candidate, weyrling
Gender: Female
Sexuality*: Pan
- Note that all sexualities are fluid or basically pansexual, due to ness's own sexual mindset. All characters are at base pansexual; they could go for anyone based on personality over gender. Some of them may lean, and have a gender preference. Some may be more bisexual. Bigenders, transgenders, and other genders may not be an issue on pern, so that aspect may not be an issue. Point: Personality over sexuality, which is why they will be listed as Pansexual with a potential lean.
Looks
Tall and a touch willowy, Aesta is 5'9". She's very thin, almost a little too thin, and has very little in the way of womanly curves. She looks permanently tired—dark circles under her hazel eyes. Her skin is a light, creamy tan, and her hair is chestnut brown- she keeps it long, though frequently puts it back in a ponytail or a semi-permanent looped braid. By the time she turns 25, gray hair swill start populating her temples, and she'll probably go grey early. She tends to slouch, and her eyes are big and frequently opened very wide, giving her a bit of an owlish appearance.
Personality
LIKES: Quiet, singing, reading, books.
DISLIKES: People, crowds, loud noises, and children who are loud and annoying.
SECRETS: her misanthropy is primarily a product of her fear of getting close to people, which is in turn a product of her fear of getting hurt by an emotional relationship.
DREAMS: Of either a set of stable relationships she doesn't have to worry about— which she never expects to happen— or a time when she's finally left the alone, which she also knows won't happen.
FEARS: Relationships and pain from relationships; betrayal.
FULL PERSONALITY:
Do you like sarcasm?
If you don't like sarcasm, you probably won't like Aesta. It's her first language. Aesta does not see the world from rose-tinted lenses— it's rather the other way around. Her favorite form of humor is rich, delicious irony, and she appreciates other people's sarcasm as well as her own. Her humor tends to be dark, and droll, though she can be counted on for her wit.
Her dry wit is actually what brought Aesta to harpering in the first place. In addition to being painfully gifted with sharp words, Aesta has a fondness for writing and composing music. She can sing decently, but it's in the creation section where her forte lies. Granted, her audience is much smaller then most harper's— her dark humor and love of irony doesn't appeal to everybody, but a more adult crowd occasionally enjoys the products of her work. Aesta can always count on writing to ease her ills— she seeks a sort of zen from it, and attempts to write daily. Rousing her from her writing will get her ire and ill-temper.
Chronically Cynical and a career pessimist, Aesta is given to expect the worst. Her dry wit gives her a surprisingly firm base on which to face the trials of life— even if most people find her humor a bit painful, it's amusing enough to herself that she can find some kind of bittersweet silver lining to an issue— and she tends to make auxiliary preparations in case things go wrong. She is thorough, even if she occasionally resents the need to be.
These traits also make Aesta someone who doesn't make friends very easily. She doesn't form emotional relationships as easily as most people— she's inclined to be wary and keep people at arm's length until they prove themselves worthy of a closer relationship. She can come off cold and distant, and her default view of people tends to be an exasperated negative. "oh, what do they want now." That kind of thing.
While her failure to make a lot of close relationships is partially due to a natural sort of wariness, it's extended further then it might otherwise, because she also has a deep-seated fear of people. There is a part of her that's lonely, that would like to have more friends and more experiences.. but she has trouble trusting people. People are.. well, people. Even if they mean well, they are fallible and unreliable. How can she trust someone, knowing that?
She's scared that having people who are close to her emotionally will cause her pain- it makes her vulnerable, to expose herself emotionally, and she hates emotional pain. She wears a shell of pessimism and sarcasm to dull the pain when it does come, and make it easier to deal with. Letting people get close is a risk too great to take— and it's also human nature, which lends to a lot of internal struggle for Aesta.
As mentioned, Aesta's default view of people is an exasperated negative. While she typically doesn't feel so strongly about most people to say she outright dislikes them, she certainly doesn't like them, and she finds most people rather distasteful. In truth, she is slightly misanthropic.
Becoming favorable in Aesta's eyes is not hard, however. She expects the worst, but if you surprise her, you can earn her respect quite easily. Proving yourself to have any number of traits she considers good in her fellow human being will get you points in her book: proving to be wise, reliable, calm, patient, good with judgment, different from the norm, an individual, someone who thinks for themselves… any of these things. She's willing to give people credit for what they are and what they do, positive and negative alike. Aesta holds a grudge, and if you prove yourself to be untrustworthy or unreliable, it will be very hard to regain respect in her eyes.
Aesta has few friends, but those she does have, she keeps close. Very close. The first steps down friendship with her is mutual respect, and that's the foundation for any relationship she manages to build. She'll consult with her friends for a different set of advice, and with people she respects. She's also slightly possessive, especially of any relationships she does choose to form.
Throughout all of this, Aesta is very calm. She's not really prone to explosive behavior or rashness- if she gets angry, it's a cool anger, and the most she'll do is snap with harsh words. She's surprisingly calm, and tends to make good decisions. Seh has an internal quality-control process, which involves attacking decision she chooses to make from a strictly logical, rational perspective— one that tends to cut out emotional considerations, if at all possible. She's not infallible by any means, so this doesn't work 100% of the time, but it's something she's been trying to do since a very young age. She tends to keep a cool head in a crisis, and has always tended to ignore her own problems (even if she hasn't got something more pressing to attend to— you know, hoping they'd go away). She's also surprisingly patient, though she'll make her unhappiness at having to be patient clear. Any potential student of hers will need to be able to handle sarcastic remarks and droll behavior, but if the can manage that, she'll take as long as they need to teach them.
Aesta is not very compassionate. This is borne from her rationality- compassion is nice, and she respects it, but all too often it gets in the way. In her role as leader, she will be very fair- to the point where it's painful. Fairness can be cruel, and she will not soften any punishments she doles out, even if the morality of the situation supports the action being punished. She's also painfully blunt and honest, and won't soften her words: if you ask her opinion, be prepared to receive it, because it may come armed with teeth.
History
Aesta was born into a family of harpers- the craft is in her blood. Thus, her fondness for writing and composition was seen as no surprise— she was encouraged to go into the craft from an early age, becoming an apprentice at 9, a year earlier then most. She excelled in most of her lessons— math was never quite her thing— and quickly developed a voice in writing.
Otherwise, her progression was normal. She did a lot of training with masterharper Maril, and spent much of her time studying— her social urge was low enough that her time spent socializing was very little. At the age of 20, walked the table as a journeyman, and went to study under Maril directly.
Around this time, strange things were happening in the weyr— the dragons had been disappearing for a few turns, and she was curious. Her break to investigate came shortly after her 21st birthday— Maril asked her to go to the weyr and help investigate things, and she gladly took this option.
It wasn't too long after that when the last clutch on the sands— the one that was genetically modified— proved to be viable, and required candidates. The weyrfolk drew from what they had, and amongst them had been Aesta— she had dreamed, in her youth, of riding a dragon, and written about it frequently. Now her dreams could come true, perhaps.
They did, beyond anything she dared to imagine. She Impressed a gold dragonet. Things with her and Silirth were excellent in a lot of ways, of course— but being the rider of a gold dragon had it's headaches, too, especially since she and hte other weyrling gold in the clutch were suddenly left the weyrwomen of a suffering weyr, with the red star looming in the horizon.

Dragon
Silirth
Gold F Queen
Silirth is a big girl, the biggest gold of the weyr to be exact and she’s quite a marvel to behold. Her body is lean and graceful and all muscle, there is not an ounce of fat on her. Her body is perfect in its proportions, even if she’s a bit longer in body than most dragons. Her way of walking could remind one of the grace with which a feline prowls around. Her wings are the proper 2/3 of her body length in span and make her not only a sight to behold on the ground, but in the air as well.
Silirth is rather unique in her color though. She is such a deep burnished gold that she looks almost bronze. But at the same time it is impossible to mistake her for one. When she unfolds her wings one can see that the inside of the membranes are a bright white gold. Her belly and toes are that same white gold. These splashes of white gold are applied very stylized and clean, giving her a very distinct two tone color. There is no gradual change in color at all, it is simply there.

He was paler then most, even the lightest shades: an albino, with only a single spot of color on him anywhere- by his mouth, a stripe of blue that marked him as his color, shaped almost like fangs if you looked at it right.
